How will I knew wheather a certain plant prefers to be watered from the top or from the bottom?
To water a plant from top or bottom?
Where in nature would a plant naturally get a drink from the bottom? Very few organic OR soil-less mixes that plants would grow well in would get saturated this way since they don't act like a sponge. If one has a hydrophobic pot of peat, it can be necessary to float it in water to get it wet again, or apply water several times from the top. Such is not the case with a chunky, porous, well-drained soil. With those, an effort must be made to apply water over the whole surface, not just in one spot or only the spot where water was applied will be wet.
It depends on the plant, purple, as the growth habit may make it impractical to water from the top. I use the bottom-watering method on my orchid, completely submerging the pot to the rim in filtered water, then allowing it to drain.
