September Blooms

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Morgan, I got mine at Arbor Gate Nursery in Tomball (near me), but Almost Eden has them.

Sorry such a delay. Steadycam, I have never been to a round up. Would love to go. I have a sister in Galveston.... Would I find the specifics on this site?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

We decide on a day, then let folks know what we have to trade or wish to have. As the day draws closer, we set up food to bring lists, limits to door gate gifts, and then directions are given out. Let Joy know if you are coming to the Hempstead RU, or Josephine to the Arlington RU, sometimes there are others planned around the area as well.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Joy - you're having a Round up at your place?? How far from Austin are you? And when would this be?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

We sure are. This year we moved our date to accommodate the Dallas group who could only get their facility rented the same weekend so our date is now November 9.
My farm is about 100 miles easy drive from Austin. I can get to the east side in ~ 2 hours or less. We are just 1.5 miles off Hwy 290. Our group is a little smaller than Dallas' but it is a great group of people and growing. Everyone loves the farm, we have a variety of animals that visit and love to be fed, a pond the kids fish in, and a quiet that can't be beat. I also have a bunkhouse that I make available to long distance travelers who would like a place to stay. Come on out, we'd love to have you.

rouxcrew -

oh, this sounds so wonderful. not that i could be there, but it definitely seems like somewhere i would like to be if i had my druthers. the bunkhouse makes it even more appealing as it sounds like trek from dallas. been in the city w-a-y longer than ever thought i'd be.

have a great RU!

Morganc, I got a bunch of Moonflowr seeds from a friend. She said, "just put them wherever you want and they'll grow.." I did that with some..... Just for jingles....
I really want some nice Moonflowers though. What do you suggest I do? A lot of folks up here have them. All say they are easy and can become invasive. I'm an embarrassed novice when growing from seed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Joy, could we say that from now on we will have our RU the 1st weekend in November? That way everyone could plan around it and since fall gets to Arlington before it gets to us, they will probably always have theirs earlier. Just a thought.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I can never do the first weekend in November, I am in Austin every year performing at the Austin Celtic Festival. But I think standardizing our RU is a good ting.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Kbh69 - Moonflowers are great....we save the seeds and plant them every year in pots on the back porch, so they can climb all over the railing. We also put them there so we can enjoy them since they open at night. We can see them out the windows, or while sitting on the back porch.

I read once that you had to "Scarify" the Moonflower seed. Basically put a nick in the hard shell casing. I use my husbands nail clippers to do that...LOL. Then I germinate them on a wet paper towel inside a plastic bag. When they germinate I plant 6 to 8 seeds per pot and let them go to town.

Hummingbird Moths like them too.

I don't see how they can be invasive as they croak in the winter. Maybe if a lot of seeds dropped possibly. But I'm sure I don't collect all the seeds and none have come up in the yard. I always plant them.
But you live north west of Austin and I don't know your weather there. Here, during the hot days I water them twice a day...and I have them in big pots. But they grow LOTS of roots, so I'm always adding compost and peat moss to the pot. I think the roots eat up all the dirt. :-)

Thanks morganc! I read that you had to mess with the seeds. That's why I doubted my friend. Apparently she has a hard time containing hers! I hope I have the same problem! I plan on a more controlled approach with the rest of the seeds! What fun!

Peace~

More Willow leaf

Kbh - that is very pretty.....looks like a little sunflower. Does it bloom all summer?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Gorgeous willow-leaf!

Andrews, TX(Zone 8a)

I just got it. My friend's blooms nonstop. I know NOTHING about Sunflowers. Do they have buds most of the way up the stem?
I'm more familiar with cact/succulent/desert type stuff. Because I really want to attract beautiful flying things to my home, I have decided to broaden my horizons. Moonflowers, Passion vine, Sunflowers, Cenizo, Lantana.... Off to a hopeful start. I'm anxious to learn more about native plants.
I grew up in tropical Texas. Now in in dry and desolate Texas. I've reached a level of acceptance :). It's taken 10 years! Still glad I "found" this forum.

Are there a list of your wants anywhere?

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I really like oxblood lilies, but it would be nice if they had a slightly longer blooming period.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree with you Dennis, they are here and gone too quickly.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I agree too Dennis, they are the prettiest if the rain lilies in my opinion, and have such a brief bloom. All my other colors, pink, white, copper and yellow, will bloom several times during the year, but aren't as striking. Although the mass of copper rain lilies blooming at one time last week was super cool.

Joy, those are really gorgeous! what kind of setting do you have them in? They really like it.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Believe it or not, they are loose in my back yard. Last spring I noticed a couple come up after some showers and planned to get out ther to dig them up, because we all know that we know best about where plant should do well. I forgot after my surgery and obviously they took advantage of their location.
The second group is in the ditch out front. Or was, I now have them potted in case folks want some. Btw, I "found" my yellow rain lilies that were in a pot as well as my red spider lilies. Both have started blooming which made identifying possible. I am down to two pots of NOID lilies left to identify. Hopefully the dogs will humor me and not remove the tags this year. So you are getting red, yellow, white, pink and copper from me.
Finally we had a butterfly. I have not seen hardly any this year.

She's a pretty lady!

Gorgeous butterfly pic Joy.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

.Ditto to few butterflies. I AM rearing two spicebush swallow tails, one from the egg.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

All right Marty!!! I wish I could raise a Spicebush, but they very rarely come to North Central Texas, and I have never seen a live one.

Arlington, TX

That pic does not look like my willow leaf sunflower? Overall size, leaf shape and flower seem different.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Josephine, early this AM I watched one of the cats preparing to roll a leaf shelter. Talk about slow motion! After about 30 minutes my patience gave out and I left him to it. Best I can tell so far, the silk that the cat spits out to link the two side of the leaf together must shrink as it dries in order to draw the leaf together. Both of my little guys or gals are growing like weeds. I really hope they survive. BTW, I heard that IKEA has the pop up laundry baskets with a zip on cover if anyone needs one.

The red & pink Hurricane lilies have finally decided to bloom! I was beginning to worry as they bloomed late this year.

those a really beautiful. So, they usually bloom around September?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I have never seen the pink ones, I have pink rain lilies but not those. Is it possible to get a bulb or two of the pink?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I got this wild poinsettia from Sandy at the Hempstead RU in the spring and it is just starting to get color in the bracts. I love the leaf shape and the red color around the tiny blooms. Pic is rather faded looking. The bracts are not pink in real life. They are bright brick red. I will fiddle with the color a bit to see if i can make it look more like it really looks to the naked eye.

Marty & Joy--They do usually bloom around Labor Day, but mine bloomed late this year for some reason. Joy, the bulbs are very deep and I only have a couple, so I won't be digging any. However, I do usually get seed pods so I could bring you some seeds if the pods ripen soon.

Andrews, TX(Zone 8a)

They must be sunflowers. Sorry.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My front flower bed is certainly appreciating the cooler temps and recent rains.

Sedum "Autumn Joy" is starting to put on it's blooms.

Esperanza is ramping up again. So pretty and such cheerful blooms.

Thought I would throw a bloom in just before the end of the month. My first Lycoris Radiata bloom. Doing a little happy dance after getting more rain yesterday than we have had in the last two years put together. And I got my garlic planted! Another first!

Very lovely Joy!!

Beverly Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

Stephanie---Is your Autumn Joy Sedum actually purple or is that just how it comes across on my computer? I have never had any except pink turning to deep red. If it is actually purple, could I have a small sprig to try to root?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Bezzie, it's actually pink and looks pink on my screen.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Joy - Should we be planting garlic and shallots now?
