Arlington, TX

Willow leaf sunflower is floppy but pretty.

yes it is pretty. never heard of willow leaf sunflower.

Arlington, TX

It's sort of invasive, blooms once late in the season and it definitely is floppy. I tried cutting it back by half in June and that helped some. Still I do like the leaves all season(if cut back) and the flowers are quite nice right now. You know I got it from Miss Frostweed.

I saw some at a friend's the other day! She offered me some. Ironic. She mentioned the same about invasiveness.
How does it winter? I failed to ask.

Arlington, TX

Very hardy. Its found in much colder states too.

Andrews, TX(Zone 8a)

Excellent! Guess I'll make a trip over to the friend's house today! Thanks for the info! Have a nice day!

Kiley, get some for me too if your friend has enough. You ARE coming to the fall roundup right?
Look at my list and see if I have anything you want in trade.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

The only thing I don't like about Willowleaf Sunflower is tt's habit to flop, but it is very pretty.
I will have 2 to share.

Arlington, TX

Have you planted it out into your garden Josephine or are they pot specimens?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

They are in gallon pots, I want to plant some out this fall and see what happens next year.

Arlington, TX

They are not well behaved so be aware. Also, you can enjoy the foliage better if you cut it back by half in June so it stays upright.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Good to know Cheryl, thank you.

A few blooms from yesterday.

Couple shots of my coral vine. I wish there was a way to show all the bees on it but I think it would take a video to show that.

Your coral vine is beautiful!

Question: Can most of the vines, such as the lovely coral vine pictured above, grow or be trained to grow on trellises? My fence is on its last legs and I worry about planting anything on it. Especially a heavier type vine.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Yup! Corals will use trees, trellises, fences... these dont belong to me, but the old gentleman in La Grande, Or invited me to enjoy his wifes flowers...

If you want your fence to last a few more years. Drive some T posts beside the old fence post and attach with plumber's straps.

Dallas, TX

Steadycam - no idea what you're referring to but can google it. What I have is an 8' cedar privacy fence that measures180 linear feet. It would be 280 but one side is inches away from my neighbor's privacy fence. (Don't ask me why these 2 fences are adjacent.) So that means 100 ' can be hauled off. But it means I have to be careful about letting any heavy vines weigh down the rest of the fence.

Yesterday I was at Lowe's and they had some small trellises on sale for $5. I was very tempted.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

My coral vine started out on my privacy fence but it reached over about 4 feet to the back porch and was knocking on the back door when I put up some cup hooks on the top edge of the porch and "hung" them there. The vine has rambled to the other end of the fence and took off on top of the Lantana and crawled over to the other side of the patio and up into a tree nearby. i just enjoy it while i can. The frost will kill the leaves but the vine will come back next year. The vine is not a heavy vine at all and as i said, it dies back each year.

Think about cattle panels. They are inexpensive but can be used in very many ways, cut and tied into an A-frame, bent into an arch, cut into strips and attached to form a gateway arbor.
Google cattle panel trellis and get some ideas.

Joy

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

The problem that I've had with cattle panels is that the metal gets very hot and burns the vines. Maybe, If you're in a cooler zone.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

It doesn't get any hotter than black iron that folks use for trellises. I have had coral vine, all kinds of gourds, cucumbers including lemons, hyacinth bean vines, jack vines, tomatoes, and more. We get over 100 degree days and the only time I have vines die is when they don't have enough water.
My field fencing is covered with grape vines, roses, wisteria and coral vine. I had a major die back of the coral vine and grape vines this summer, I upped the watering and both recovered well. I even have wisteria and my roses growing on the black mesh of my front entrance.
The biggest gripe is cleaning vines off come winter, well cooler weather. Coral vine is a pain, and it goes everywhere like Marty says. I leave my wisteria and my grape vies up, but tear the others down. Well sort of.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

I guess mine are too picky!

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Recent rains and a little cooler temps have refreshed the flowers. My newly planted variegated hibiscus has just started blooming, one bloom a day so far.
My red Esperanza just after replanting.
The copper rain lilies are ecstatic about the recent rain.
My Ruellia and moss verbena, both from the spring RU
And my Jack bean vine is making my porch smell wonderful.

It is a red Esperanza, a new cultivar for this year

Nice, Joy! I've seen orange, but never red.

Here it is almost the end of the month and my first time sharing this month....although I have been lurking to see what blooms in Texas.

Since moving to the Austin area almost 9 years ago, we have tried to get many things to grow for us, and I see some of you have them too.

Night Blooming Cereus.....We received two little leaves 3 years ago from my neighbor, who got them from Japan, and planted them. Took a few years but they bloomed.....and through just messing with it I have discovered some interesting facts about my plant. I don't think you can kill it....seriously. I wanted to start some cuttings for a friend so I whacked off a 3 ft long piece. then cut it down and shoved it in some soil. It lived. The pieces I had cut off I threw on the patio table. 2 weeks later, I notice there is a new leaf starting on the piece I had discarded. So I stuck it in some dirt....it grew. Some leaves will grow aerial roots on them....I remove those and stick in dirt. My plant likes to be pot bound. And if you feed it....it will bloom. We call ours "Floppy" because it is so unruly. Blooms are in spring and fall when cooler....but puts on leaves during the summer. Ours is on the back porch in full shade but bright area. Had it in part sun last year and some leaves burned, so now full shade.

Morgan C--Interesting to read your post about night blooming Cereus. A friend gave me one a few weeks ago and it bloomed 3 days after. Quite a sight!! I'm glad to hear about the light requirements because when she gave it to me it was a little sunburned. Also, it is root bound and I was thinking it needed a new pot, but I guess not. Do you feed it anything special? At what temperature do you bring it inside?

Our variegated yucca bloomed for the first time this month.

Ok, I have two blooms that I am not sure what they are. One (I am sure) was from our spring RU and the other is in a field just on the other side of a gate.

I am thinking mist flower but the plant doesn't look like my Gregg's blue mist flower. The pink blooms I have no idea but it is about two foot tall and has a woody stem. Would like to know more before I think about rustling it.

Yes Bluemistflower, Conoclinium coelestinum. The pink one is an Agalinis, False Foxglove, don't know the exact one, there are many and most are annuals.
Here is a link to the different types,

Covenant, that is one Gorgeous Yucca!!! Congratulations.

(Carol) Euless, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you! It was so exciting to watch that spike grow taller every day, then to see it bloom.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

I may try and dig it up then, if it is an annual maybe it will reseed in my yard. Thanks

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

covenantgarden - How nice to have a yucca bloom now....and variegated too. So gorgeous.

Bezziec - We make our own compost and add peat moss to it for extra acidity. But our soil is very alkaline so anything acidic all the plants love. I also add Epsom salts and coffee grounds to the mix. I mix all this up together in a huge mixing bowl then give handfuls of it to all the potted plants. We do re-pot our Cereus when we put him in the greenhouse....just not a big bump up in size pot. We move him in when the night temps start to head towards 50s.

rouxcrew - I love your red Esperanza. Where ever did you get it? I have yellow and the tangerine one, but have never seen the red. I love it.

Some of our Sept blooms. Moy Grande Hibiscus, Vincas, Guara, Pentas, and Blue (something), Siam Tulip, and Moonflowers.
