You tell me!
WOW! does that sum it up???!!! Lisa
You might want to check out the customer reactions to Ty Ty in the Plants By Mail FAQ before you order anything. I think I remember reading some negative comments about this company. Here's the link: http://pbmfaq.dvol.com/list/
Oh yeah, this company is also known as Aarons' Bulbs, Aaron's Amaryllis, actually I think they have a bunch of names....here's the link to the comments about Aaron's: http://pbmfaq.dvol.com/list/aarons.html
And here's the link to comments about TyTy: http://pbmfaq.dvol.com/list/tyty.html
Well - I mean - you all know I'm new to gardening in the US and obviously it's going to be a case of trial and error for me and when I accidentally found this site I thought to myself it can't be legit at those prices!! Now I'm getting reaction from you and it seems there might be a negative side to this company. But you have to admit, the pictures are quite good! :-)
Read the comments on the link - I think I will give this company a miss!

Oh, Louisa, it has nothing to do with being new to gardening or the US - if you read through some of the comments for various companies, you'll find very experienced American gardeners who are kicking themselves for getting taken in when they felt they should have known better. Pictures of luscious looking fruit and beautiful flowers will melt just about any gardener's heart, eh?
I happened to find the Plants By Mail site this winter, and through it I learned about some companies that I might very well have ordered from otherwise. On the reverse side, I also felt more comfortable ordering from some "new" (to me) companies after reading positive comments from other gardeners. (For instance, I had never heard of Bluestone Perennials, but I've recently placed an order with them, in part because of the customer comments I read.)
Now I just try to pass along this website resource to other gardeners, and hope it helps them as much as it has me!
After reading the negative comments, I think I'll stay away from ordering from them by mail. They're not too far from me so the only way I'll buy from them will be to drive to their place.

If Cape of Africa Lily: (Heamanthus katherinae) is the same as 'blood lily', $25 for a bulb is highway robbery! I purchased one for about $3-$4.
And $6 for Agapanthus is way too high.
It was really the tree prices that amazed me. I didn't look at the rest of the plant material. :-)
I found the price high! Cleopatra Canna is listed at $15.00. I've found it at $1.50 per bulb at Horn Canna Farm.
There is a nursery called Lee's in McMinnville, Tn. that has really good prices on all sorts of fruit trees, berries, and landscaping trees and bushes. I bought a huge order from them a couple of years ago and the plants all arrived in really good shape. I wish I could give you an actual address or a phone number but I misplaced my catalog when I moved and haven't found it yet.
If that's the type of stuff you are looking for, it would be worth calling information.
I haven't been to the nursery called Lee's but have driven to McMinnville several times to purchase trees and shrubs. It is good place to go to "save a few bucks" when trying to plant a lot of trees or shrubs. There are many commercial growers there but not many of the nurseries sell to "walk in" customers. I have been quite happy with my plants. I am going to check out Lee's and might want to order from them in the future. Thanks for the tip turtlewoman.
Can we order from this nursery on line?
I don't know. I will need to check it out further. Maybe turtlewoman or someone else will know if they are an online company. The chamber of commerce in McMinnville was going to be my first place to try. That is what I did before we ever drove there to buy plants. Since we aren't a commercial establishment we had to bypass the growers who sell to professionals rather than to folks who just grow plants for a hobby. Good luck in your search. Let us know if you have any luck. I would like a catalog also. I don't need any "major" plants right now so won't be making a trip this spring.
Elena, my husband works near McMinnville, so I can always use an excuse to go eat lunch with him, and make a sidetrip to McMinnville. I will make at least one if not two (or three or four....) trips to the nurseries this spring and summer. And since you and I live so close to each other, let me know if you want me to pick up some things for you.....;0)
I haven't even met you yet but am really looking forward to it. You sound like such a nice person. I don't have any major wants right now but I will certainly bear in mind the fact that you will be traveling to McMinnville. It was so sweet of you to offer to buy plants for me. Who knows what I will decide I have to purchase when Spring Fever really hits me? I have pretty good control until then and once spring really gets here the defenses will come tumbling down and I will likely start acting like a kid in a candy shop. I was walking around the yard today and wondering what plants you might want that I have. Just save me one of everything and I will do the same. ha! That should work nicely!!!! Once we get closer to swapping, we can actually talk on the phone without having to pay long distance charges. I guess I can always walk around the yard with phone in hand and ask you if you want "this or this or this". Ha! I am getting pretty close to starting planting seeds and then putting them in cold frames when they start to grow the least bit. Some of the seeds that take longer to germinate should do ok with me doing that. I just don't have the space to put them for any period of time that will require the proper lighting, etc.
Time to eat so I will close for now. I have been outside most of the day since it has been so beautiful. I have worked up quite a hunger.

Gosh Dave, You are truly amazing! Thanks for the prompt research. I will get them on the phone right away and order one of the catalogs. I will also ask them if they will sell to walk in customers. I guess I need to wait until they open for business this morning since it is still too early, huh?
