lawn what to put on it in the autumn

Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

There are so many different products in the garden centres which one should i choose, lawn sand, feed & weed etc. How do i know which one to choose? I live in the south of England. My lawn has some bare patches & some moss I did put a weed & feed on it in the spring.

Go Back to the garden centre and speak to someone who actually knows about lawns, not the girl on the till and not the guy who directs trafic in the car park LOL, but do ask for someone who can help you select the grass treatment you require because as you said, there are too many products BUT, most will do the lawn good.

I like the Spring lawn "Weed & Feed" you scatter that on the lawn about April time or even earlier IF you live in a warmer part of UK, then there are the Autumn "Weed & Feed that is a mix made up of different nutrients that the lawn requires because at both these times of year, the lawn needs different types of fertilisers, make sure it can kill off the moss and after that IF there is still time, you can sew / patch the bare areas of the lawn BUT do read the instructions before you set about using it on the lawn.
I try scarify the lawn before I use either of those products as it gets rid of most of the Moss and lifts up the weeds like Daisies, Clover ect that lay flat on the grass and the mower cant get to cut them.
Dont worry though IF you cant get round to raking the moss out of the grass, but it does help IF you remove the moss as best as you can.
IF you have a huge lawn, you can hire an electric lawn rake / scarifier and it really makes light work of the moss.
After you do the the rake work and scatter the "weed Feed" stay off the grass for a good few days as the product can stick to your feet ?shoes and then you will have a nice green lawn and then pale bits where you walked.
Unless your lawn is a real mess, dont worry IF you cant get the Autumn "Weed & Feed" lots of UK residents prefer to wait and do spring work on the lawn anyway, and never bother with Autumn work but, only you can decide how bad your lawn is and take advice from a proper knowledgable assistant at the Garden store.
By the way, up here in Scotland the summer has left us and the temps have dropped way down already BUT we did have a great 3 months of summer days and that came right after the freeze from winter so we had no spring, we went from winter into summer and the garden didn't know if it was coming or going, so now were having cold winter winds blow the garden to bits.
Hope all goes well with the lawn and it looks like a bowling green come spring.
Best Regards. WeeNel.

Like your style staffdriver, does he know your going to get him involved or is this a surprise LOL.
Maybe that's all the lawn will need, moss can make the lawn look horrible IF there is lots of it, after the moss has been raked off, give ot a sweep with a stiff brush I like those witches Bisums type brooms as it is light weight and it flicks any loose earth, moss, leaves ect without harming the grass,
Leave alone for maybe 5-7 days then have another look, IF there are many bare patches you might want to seed those areas, IF not many, just rake the soil on the bare bits and sprinkle grass seed and water it in.
Just dont go rush out and spend lot's of money IF you dont really need to, or take a picture to the garden store and ask their help if any is needed now or in spring.

Good luck and best regards. WeeNel.
