Status Update on Upcoming Changes

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have some photos I want to delete in PFs. Is there a way to request this? I still can't see a "report error" button. Thanks

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Kell, if there are just a few images you're swapping out, you can use the "Contact Us" link to send us the links ato the images that need to be removed.

Ottawa, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Terry,

So, how about increasing the number of pictures we can post to a message from 5 to 8? I suggest that, because the 5th picture starts a new row of thumbnails, which looks kind of "lonely" with only one picture on it. An even dozen might be even better. That would fill out three rows of thumbnails, which wouldn't look half bad.

Is the home page down, can't get it to display!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Zen_man, the fifth photo will soon join the other four :-)

Seedfork, if the main page is down, the site is down. It works fine for me - I hit it right before I clicked on this thread, then hit it again when I saw your post. It loaded without any probs both times.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

When I try the home page I get error 404: File not found.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

Screen shot may be more helpful!

Click on "Home" and try hitting your F5 key. That may - or may not help, but it's a hiccup somewhere in your browser.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

Nope, that made no difference. Strange, so far that is the only page I have run across that does not display.I have windows 7 with IE10.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

I had to go back and clear my cache again , reselect the home page web site, select a new icon for the favorites bar, and now it works again.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Good to hear, Terry, thank you. I will return to waiting for the next improvements.

Terry ~ Are the techs working on the actual pages "live" right now?

I just went into one of the threads in the Upper Midwest Garden forum and for the first time, ever, the text was cut off. So I went out and right back to it and within 30 seconds the text box had widened dramatically (almost like it used to be before the changes).

Next, I came here to ask about it and this text box is also wide. I'm Okay with it no matter what as I've managed to adjust to most all the changes. I'm just curious if it's you guys or if some zombie has taken over my computer.

I didn't bother with a Screen Shot because it's changed twice in 30 seconds.

Thanks!!!

We rolled out an update about half an hour ago: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1329165/

That's probably what you were seeing. Hopefully the changes are all good - bigger fonts, larger text area, and no spilling over from the profile column into the forum posts.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Terry!!!

I guess I should have checked for your new thread first. I did just use the link and read through your new posts. That's great news!!

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

nutsaboutnature, runs into the text box. The date no longer does.

Enterprise, AL(Zone 8b)

If I go from largest text size to medium the name no longer runs into the text box.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Everything was fine after this change. But I wanted my text a bit darker/larger. It fits in the box but now the header on the home page runs off the right edge. Guess I will go from 125 back down to 110 or 100. Kind of disappointing as it is easier to read the way I want it.

Thanks for working on it.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Seedfork, my user name doesn't run into the text box on my computer, but I've always had my text size at medium which is the default setting. I've never changed it, even with all the DG changes.

And no, no, no...I will NOT change my user name to something shorter! So there!! ^_^

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I put my font back up to larger and everything looks good except a few names are running into the post. I'm going back to medium so no worries just wanted to let you know. Everything else looks great!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Just to let you know that for some reason the photos in Plantfiles are now dropped way down. To see them when you first go to a plant name, you have to scroll way down. At first I thought they were missing.

I cleared my cache and it fixed that problem, Kell.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I'm mystified as to why you all have to clear your cache every 3 secondz. I've done that about once in my life.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Kell, I can't replicate what you're seeing - this is the entry, yes? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/361949/

Mine shows up with the enlarged image at the top and then - because there are 55 images for this entry - they go all the way to the bottom of the page.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I cleared my cache (Thanks steadycam3!!) and it is now perfect! Thanks Terry

It also seems like the photos are no longer being cropped in PlantFiles. I hope I am correct in this quick assessment.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Summerkid, I have had to clear my cache just twice now to make things work well on DG with the changes. Once the first day of change and then again today. Gratefully, it was so easy to do thanks to what
poisondartfrog wrote on the very first thread on the new changes to DG.
For Chrome users:
"Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar. (Three horizontal parallel lines at far right near top)
Select Tools.
Select Clear browsing data.
In the dialog that appears, select the checkboxes for the types of information that you want to remove. (Clear cache is one of the options)
Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete."

I know how to do it, Kell (thanx tho!).
It's just never necessary.
Wouldn't hitting F5 do the trick?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh, I just repeating it for those of us that might not know. I know you know! LOL It was just a fast, easy fix the first day for me when DG was off from the changes. I was so thankful for such clear instructions from poisondartfrog.

I have no clue about F5. Next time I will try F5 and see. I hate to admit it but I have never hit any of the F buttons. My cat often does and the screen goes nuts. I guess I should learn them.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

F5 is "refresh." So if I'm on the DG home page & there are no new posts, I can hit that & the page updates. That is why I'm thinking it might refresh the cache as well.

Other function keyz that are very useful are F1, which takes you to "help" for whatever application you are using, and F11, which goez to full screen & back, making your Web page bigger & overlaying it on all the tabs & menu bars. Try it! It might help those subscriberz with vision issues.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks!

I did hit the refresh arrow first when I first saw the big space in PFs. The refresh arrow seems to be the same as F5. It did not fix it.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

I love the new update! I didn't have the problems so many others experienced, but still very happy for the larger font and message box. Also, it's nice to have the photos in a line, and in order. Thanks!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Gosh, Summer, thanks. F11, I didn't know, nor the other F tricks. F11 (full screen) will be useful. Thanks again!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

At your service, sweetpea.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the improvements to the search function. That the advanced search option doesn't appear until you get the first results is inconvenient but seems acceptable.

While viewing the forums, there appears to be a left sidebar occupied only by the search box and the social media links, leaving an empty two-inch left margin all the way down the rest of the page. Are you intending to place ads there? It seems a waste of space otherwise.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh Don, please go view some of the other threadz at the top of this forum.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Maybe instead of putting regular ads, they could be something new, like ads by DG members that have plants or related garden items for sale. Like a "Craig's List" for DG members...that would be for the paying members, and of course for the free members, they could put regular ads there....

There could be articles of interest as well, just to keep people looking there to see what's the latest...

Whaddya' think, Melody?? Another revenue stream....

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

People! Please catch up with that whole "blank space" issue. There have been hundredz of posts on it, just recently, right here in this forum.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

I apologize if I was flogging a dead horse, but I did read every post on this page and while there were many about the avatar column, none until mine mentioned the blank left border. I was taken to this page by a link from another forum and had not realized there were any other threads in this forum.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I no longer have text bleeding through into the message window instead of wrapping and I like the font size. I might be in the minority, but I PREFERRED a slightly narrower message window because it was easier to see a whole line at a glance.

The only real issue I still have is the scrolling one. I MUST scroll right to see the entire screen (except on the home page, or maybe MY home page, where what I want to see is at the left). I don't mind scrolling right once, but I have to do it again for each page I visit.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sorry, other than cutting the name column short, and also the righthand side margin, and leaving that darned wide spot on the left, I do like the longer writing column.

Yes, I would have done it differently, but apparently that left hand space is sacred.
