Hi All,
Evaluating the light conditions in my new garden, I'm seeing 4-6 hours of afternoon sun.
I also see that the black eyed Susan's I planted last year are thriving in these conditions. I'd like to add some variety there, so would appreciate your suggestions of other perennials that might compliment, even blance, the strong statement these flowers are making.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
Black Eyed Susan Mate
Coneflowers do well in pretty much the same conditions as Black-eyed Susans and now come in lots of varieties, though the basic Purple and Purple-Pink varieties are still very popular and attractive. They also help to soften the bold statement of the bright Yellow Black-eyed Susans.
I have Black-eyed Susans and Coneflowers side-by-side in even less sun than you and they've been thriving for about 5 years (in fact my Black-eyed Susans have gotten crowded so I'll be digging them up to divide this Autumn).
Both of these perennials are American Natives and do well in all sorts of soil and weather conditions. They're also Bee and Butterfly favorites. If you look at pictures of Native or Butterfly gardens, you'll notice many of them have these two perennials included.
By-the-way, Coneflower seeds are a favorite of Goldfinches. I always leave the flower heads standing at the end of the season. I love watching them perched on top, methodically pulling out and eating the seeds (they'll eat Black-eyed Susan seeds as well).
