Hi I am a new member here. I am currently looking at purchasing a Schefflera bonsai. I don't really care about the bonsai part, nor do I want to deal with all the work, I am just looking for a few months of nice bonsai look and then back to an ordinary houseplant. So I have a few questions before I bite the bullet on this auction I am looking at buying that ends in 5 days. First, I am not a total noobie, I have a 15 year old 24" desert rose that I keep on my desk. I have a bougainvillea vine that I keep indoors that does fairly well and grows pretty fast, but no flowers. I have 3 cattlia orchids that love my desk. I have an African Gardenia which flowers for me off just window light. I have 2 huge pothos vines growing hydroponically on my fish tanks. And I have 1 Phylanopsis that also loves the desk. All my houseplants must stay in my room, which is small. This room has around 100% humidity due to 6 topless aquariums in a relatively small area plus a humidifier running 24/7 just for the plants. The window receives only morning sun but no trees blocking the sun exposure so I guess it would be direct. I have an 18watt cfl clamp-on I used in the past for plants but I can use it if necessary, all I have to do is plug it in. Can I grow schefflera in these conditions? Light is my biggest concern.
Also if it helps I can keep an electric warming pad under the pot to warm the soil and roots, I do this with my bougainvillea and it loves it.
Schefflera Help
I would think morning sun is enough to keep it going, but others can chime in here. I have never grown them in anything near 100% humidity, though. Has anybody else had experience with that?
Look through these…May give you some insight… http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Schefflera&sear
Good luck.
I almost forgot. This schefflera is of the 'luseane' variety.
Okay that is the S.arboricola 'luseane' … http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/177944/
Sounds like your conditions may work for it…Good luck.
