hi, i just started gardening, im trying to identify bugs that i see in my garden. i cant figure out what this is. is it some sort of grasshopper?

Looks like a Caddisfly to me. There are quite a few differing varieties (colors). Try looking at images on the net. If it is then the answer to your question is neither friend or foe because they spend most of their lives under water as a larvae.

Looks just like a Caddisfly, but it should have huge moth like wings. I fly fish with them all the time.
