I added some 5-20-10 time released fertilizer to my tomato plants in pretty small containers (topsy turvy)..I added about a tablespoon.will this be ok?the plants are upside down so I put the fertilizer on top (of course) then mixed it in a little & watered.I truly appreciate your time.thanks
5-20-10 fertilizer
The ratio seems about right.
Is the '1 tablespoon' dose according to the label? I would never use more than the label says. They want you to use it up so you will go buy more.
thumbofgreen, I think I would agree with Diana when she said to always read the instructions on the packet, bottle or whatever the plant feeds are sold in, it is really harmful to all plants to have too strong a feed given, I always work on the idea that when FIRST starting to feed a plant, go for half the doze stated by the makers of the product, after several days or a week, IF no signs of colour change, curled leaves, or wilting, are evident, then it's safe to say that the feed is not harming the plant, I would then go ahead (with LIQUID Tomato's, feed once a week at one of the watering's) as more flowers appear it's then time to perhaps increase the feed, same dose, but twice a week.
Remember that as more flowers are produced, the earlier ones will be setting into tiny tomatoes so you need to try be consistent with watering or the fruits being produced will crack, as like a sponge, the plant want to soak up all the water then have to close down IF the watering is not given / consistent to keep a steady amount of watering's.
You still appear to have trouble with wet foliage from reading your other threads, so would it be possible to bring down (unhook) the plants and set them in buckets of water (right way up) allow the soil to soak up as much water as it needs, and then lift out from the buckets, let it drain away from the soil then rehang the plants again. if you need to feed you can add the (directed dose) into the bucket and allow the soil to take the plant mix up.
What is there to loose, give it a try at a couple of your regular waterings and see how it goes.
Can I make a further suggestion re Topsy -Turvy Tomato growing, you should try stick to the one thread for any questions re the same subject.
I feel there is some confusion beginning to form with 3 threads running re the same persons questions, on the same subject. The threads can run for as long as you continue to need help, but it will easier for everyone to help you get the best answers IF everyone knows were talking about the same subject matter with the same person.
Best Regards. and good luck. WeeNel.
I got the 5 20 10 (master) fertilizer from a buddy at work.I read the bag today & it said for my size container use a tablespoon.I was just curious of the timing.they have no fruit only flowers.didnt know
if it was at the rite stage for fertilizer.
WeeNel I will now keep questions on the same thread.thanks again.I was thinkin I'd get answers quicker if I started a new thread but it makes sense the way you explained.with that being said I'm gona post a pic of one of the leaves of the plant that's changing color..I don't think its a fungis probably a watering issue.
Some of the leaves on my Tomato's look like your's with the brown tips on them, I just either tug them off or snip off the damaged looking part and leave the rest in place, sometimes it dont get any worse while other times I have to do another snip a few days later, I can only think it is due to the plants leafing out faster as they mature and begin to use energy making flowers or fruit.
sometimes here in UK the brown can show IF we have had a quick drop in temp as I have to grow my Tomato's, cucumbers and peppers in my greenhouse and we dont always get a lot of bright sunshine.
Anyway try not to panic quite so much as you wont get shot at dawn IF your trial for growing topsy turvy tomato's are not too good, you just try learn where you could have improved the method and go again next year.
Maybe a drip watering system would help you out but not thought how to set one up yet.
Best Regards. WeeNel.
