Pinky winky hydrangea

Aurora, IL

I did plant the two pinky winky's. did plant only one in the 4x8 space as many recommended, and that is working out fine. Planted the other elsewhere. Both thriving and even starting to flower. However on one of them, some of the leaves haveparts that are turning a lighter apple green color. Is that usual? Is it a sign of disease? It looks really healthy otherwise. Thanks for all your advice.

You have what is called Chlorosis and this is caused by too much Alkaline soil, the best way to amend the soil is by adding peat to the soil by helping to make the soil more acidic, there are acidic feeds on the market for such plants but make sure you don't over do the dose, just apply as directed on the packet.

The other signs to look for is aphids sucking the foliage, look at the underside of the leaves and if you find any sucking insects either kill those between fingers and thumb, hose off with a strongish blast from the hosepipe, or use a chemical spray but do try spraying with WARM water and dish washing liquid mixture as this is great for greenfly or similar and it's chemical free.

Hope this helps you out and good luck. WeeNel.
