Coffee Break # 97

That's right, Lucy! Their noses are VERY good at sniffing out good things! LOL

Hey, the right margin has changed back to be readable again!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah but now for me the time and date are running into the posts and my home page is cut off...anyone else?

Nope looks fine, well except for the huge margins on either side but nothing runs together

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

It looks okay if I use Firefox but I don't like that and hate to have to use it for just here. I'm sure some day it will be figured out.

South Hamilton, MA

I can read everything, but print back to small. sigh!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I can read all again too but print is rather small. But I can zoom to make it larger. Nasty day here. Suppose to be heading off to vt around noon, but will have to check if boats are running. My 98 year old mom got here and was delighted to have our son show up to surprize her on Tue. We had a dinner party in her honor with some of our friends she had gotten to know over the nearly 50 years that i have been on the Island. She wowed them all as she is as sharp as a tack. She liked the garden, but not keen on our bumpy stone paths. I am sssuming at some point in the near future i won't either and will need to replace them for me to walk on them safely. Patti

Maybe this is a clearing the cache matter, ronnie. I know Firefox doesn't save the settings so it's always like starting anew. I haven't gotten around to fixing things on every browser yet but it's fine for me on google chrome now.

I'm asking for mortar in the flagstones of our planned patio for the same reason as Patti. Much more expensive though. Kids hope we'll keep the house forever because it's rather unique, but even now I have doubts about all the hills and steps.

South Hamilton, MA

The am of the time runs over into small print, . We see the ends of the sentances now.

Morning all, Hope to be up in Vermont this coming week!

I have always wondered why the Date/Time is so overly BIG compared to the other items in that box. So much so that when I increase my text size to what I like in my browser (Firefox) or on this page it doesn't stay in its box.
Hope the techs will find a way to make it stay in its box rather than me adjusting!

Hope the week ahead is filled with weather we can all live with and enjoy.

Good news, coleup!!!

Very excited, we are heading up to a lake just east of Mt. Hood this evening after we pick up grandson, Nick, from racing camp. Will come back Monday, then on Tuesday we fly back to NJ.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

What is ATP? I just had a chance to read above more carefully.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Any suggestions about sites that have a good gardening journal? My stack to enter is getting too big to ignore until they either recover my last 70 entries or else tell me they can't be recovered. I'd like to have a link to acceptable botanical classification with it.

I'm keeping DG for the forums.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Rosemary ATP is another gardening site some of us visit. I can't link you to it here.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Just search All Things Plants

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks.

Here's proof that pride goes before a fall. I was feeling almost smug about how easy it was to pull the garden weeds that had grown tall due to my neglect/injuries/rain. So, I reached into a particularly weedy patch and there was a wasps home there. Yes, lots of stings, but at least I was wearing a heavy glove or it would have been worse. Also, good thing it was the left hand. Needless to say, I'm making do with books about waterfalls and landscapes for the rest of the day. DH told me some people go to unlicensed clinics to try to get stung in order to improve their arthritis. Seems I'd choose the arthritis.

Thomaston, CT

Oh, Rosemary...how awful! Wasp stings are very painful! Lots of ice & Benadryl helps.....also, meat tenderizer on the stings helps. My script here is fine, I just have to keep moving it to the left!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oh no Rosemary I hope it doesn't hurt too much :( feel better soon.

South Hamilton, MA

I flinched when I heard about the wasp stings.

The print when I read posts is small again, even though I have the page on the maximum large on my computer. It used to be the size to read as the typing size which is fine.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the suggestions Marilyn. I'll get over this before long. I didn't know about meat tenderizer. BTW, how are you feeling?

Wish I had to know-how and access to the website to fix everyone's problems reading the print. DG should hire a 16 year-old tech savy kid.

My DS who is almost 20 now is working on an animation with his dad. Really cool. Can't post until the product he is demonstrating is in use. Since it's with DH's employment, we won't gain any big profits, but DS is able to supplement his fast food and catering money and get his foot in the door as a machine designing engineer. When we show up at Boston Market the managers give us free food. They must like having him there too.

How was the iris sale, Lucy? I was about a mile away at Concord Court but not even 10 minutes of free time, then finished the day in Woburn, and then it was late.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

we always used baking soda and water paste for stings. hope everyone is healing!

Thomaston, CT

My doctor told me about the meat tenderizer....after I retired from teaching I worked for the post office, part time for 5 years....You have no idea how many yellow jackets are inside mailboxes....and they aren't happy when you open them up! I'm feeling fine...I think I had a virus....The project your DH & son are working on sounds interesting.....let us know when it's finished.....

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Tape a penny over a sting, relieves swelling quickly

South Hamilton, MA

Irises sold out. Lots of people.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Must have been a great sale. Sorry to have had to miss it.

Thomaston, CT

Never heard that one, Debi......hope my stings are over for awhile!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I'd never heard that about a penny before either. Interesting!!

Glad the iris sale went well, Lucy

Glad DS is getting his foot in the door, Rosemary

Glad you're feeling better, RD

Hey gardeners! Solution for painful bite or sting right in our own yards(well except for Bill's)

Learned this at Well Sweep Herb Farm

take a leaf off a broadleaf plantain weed, burn the tip and squeeze the liquid out and apply right to the area...when I got stung couple weeks ago I did that and the pain IMMEDIATELY went away

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! wish I knew to try that! Swelling and itching have greatly reduced. Poison Ivy rash seems to be taking a long time to clear up this year.

They didn't select this product so DS was told to submit his bill. Then they want him to make a 3-D rendering of the next design and solve a few design problems for this company. A good thing about this is timing. In August, the fast food business starts to find their replacement workers for the summer kids, so there's less work for college kids. Resume may make up for lackluster grades when it comes time to look for paid internships next year.

One more month of young person dramas in our house!

Thomaston, CT

Makes life interesting, for sure! Glad to know about the plantain leaf.....I've found rubbing sweet fern on arms & legs makes a good insect deterrent...not sure I'd rub it on my face. I have a bad bite on my leg right now.....red & swollen, burns & itches like crazy....have put everything I could think of on it, not getting much better after 3 days.....

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Ouch! I'm just grateful not to have to deal with the killer bees.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Great tips.....always learn something here! Thanks!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Must have been a nice visit, and what nice gifts from Louise and Hank. Wikstoemia looks like a very nice plant for the shrub border.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Awesome!!!

Thomaston, CT

Lucky you, Bill......nice visit, nice addition to your garden!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Well, let me tell you....Bill and Cindy's place is prettier than any arboretum we've ever seen. We weren't able to get together last year, so the growth, the pond and the expanded JM count were stunning. I took some photos on my iphone and will try to get them uploadable soon. If we are all lucky, he will have another RU next fall. He and Cindy are awesome hosts and the food they served us was all of our favorites....and perfectly carmelized. LOL. Hank's absence from the horseshoe pits brought him down, and of course, Bill took no mercy whatsoever. Those two are a pair! Cindy and I opted for some relaxing visit time while they were in combat. I want go into the barracudas we spotted in Bill's pond. At first I confused them with piranhas, but thankfully the cute little frogs survive their presence. Bill is always full of surprises. 😱

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Sounds like a great visit guys!

Thomaston, CT

Yes, Bill should charge admission! What a gorgeous place.....Talked to my son last night....it was "Open Farm" days in Goshen this weekend....he figures about 500 folks toured the blueberry farm, he & his family were all pretty tired. Even the little ones worked.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great visit indeed!!

RD, how awesome that sooo many toured the farm. Gives the kids great exposure to the community.
