Smoke Tree that does not get "smoky"

I have a smoke tree that has grown well and looks healthy and begins to bloom every year but loses the blooms before they get "smoky". We've had the tree for at least 5 or 6 years and every year it has had more blooms than the last, Does anyone have information about soil type or nutrients that might help?
