MidAt plant shopping June 2013 ...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That Pink Snowbell was huge!! It's a gorgeous specimen. I hope it settles in well and blooms like mad for you next year. :-)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I spent a little bit of time when I got home getting it located in the right spot. I wanted to be able to see it from the conservatory, but didn't want it in the site line to the pond. I think I got it in a perfect location and will get the hole dug tomorrow.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

shrub...regular shrub... hahahaha

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't know what it is about half-price sales, but I really love them. I've been stuck inside all day today on the phone trouble-shooting internet problems, and I am really really unhappy!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Guess regular shrub is better than irregular shrub!! Hehehe. Wonder what he was thinking.

Sounds like loads of fun!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

boo hiss happy!!

Yeah I want to go ask for a not regular shrub....

I nominate Coleup...for president of SPCP*

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Well, I used my new Pro Mix today when my daughter and I worked together to pot up several tender perennials for overwintering! It certainly is light and porous!! Hope all my plants like it. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Checked at HD this morning to see of any of the Turtleheads Chelone (??)
were left. ALL GONE!!! Someone else must havr known it was a good deal.
Red Hot Pokers gone too---

Oh, well.....Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, I looked for Chelone Lyonii at Seasons today and they had some, but they were larger pots (fuller plants) at $8 each, so that doesn't sound like what you wanted. Sorry!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I found 2 'Hot Lips' Chelone at HD on Saturday (last 2) for $3.50, and Coleup found me one last week for $5 ... I think I'm going to try them in a couple of different spots and overwinter a "spare" in a pot. If I end up with an extra "spare," Happy, it's yours.

Picked up several azaleas & rhodi's, $5 - $8.50... I'm getting them placed around in back, along with the ones I got this spring... hopefully can get them all dug in with daffodils planted around them! Trying to figure out the best place to put my new serviceberry, too, so we can enjoy both its red/orange autumn leaves and its white spring blooms!

HD had a big (7G) purple-leafed ornamental plum ($22.50), and Coleup scored me a Forest Pansy redbud, so I'm placing those with my new Japanese Snowbell tree in the back corner of the garden (good sight-lines from the morning room & back deck). I also have a "wild plum" (grown from a seedling) and a new little 'Montmorrency' cherry to place.

In eyeballing all of that and seeing where some low limbs can be trimmed from the mature trees along the back, I think I'm also seeing some good places to try those shrub-type cherry bushes I've been considering (Theresa said they put some in this year, and they were very tasty)... and my 2 potted paw paw trees from One Green World might go back there also, near the pecans, rather than in the other back corner.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter, sounds like you are enjoying your new acquisitions! :-) I need to dig up a few more azaleas to make room for some of my lovely new shrubs.

At Seasons yesterday, the siren call of the Red Twig Dogwood ('Arctic Fire') finally overcame me, and before I knew it one was home with me. ;-) It is a dwarf variety so works as a shrub.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Good thing about that Catmint- if you want it to stay small, you will be cutting out the oldest stems to make room for young more colorful new ones. So it kind of reinforces not letting it get so huge.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint: I wish I had picked up a red twig dogwood - I meant to circle back and get one and then I forgot -- they are wonderful plants. We did get a 6' Yoshino cherry tree at Home Depot for $23 that I am excited about.

Critter - hold on to your Chelone unless you really don't want them. I was hoping to get enough (9 or more) for a big patch, so just one, while wonderful, won't make or break that project. I didn't see any perennials at any of the Home Depots I went to (maybe 4) over the last week -- I guess I was just too late or didn't hit the right stores.

If anyone notices that Meadows Farms has put all its perennials at 50% off, please give me a shout. Or when they get to their 75% off sale....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

All trees and Shrubs, with a few exceptions--like red pots (?)
and Rosemary Topiaries are now 50% off.
Still lots of Rhodos and Azaleas there. A bunch of Dwarf Crape Myrtles,
Loads of Hosta. etc...

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Seasons in Gaithersburg had a bunch of the Red Twig 'Arctic Fire' Dogwoods, Happy! They were $20 with the 30% off discount. Very pretty.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks. I'm guessing they close by 6pm, which means I can't make it until next weekend by which time they'll likely be sold out....

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

You all are getting excellent prices on trees and shrubs!

Catmint, I seriously considered that redtwig dogwood at the Ace nursery, but I needed something smaller. Arctic fire would be the perfect size. Too bad I can't make it out to Gaithersburg for along while.

I was up in northern Howard Co yesterday, near the Carroll Co border, so I checked out Sun Nurseries. They have a huge selection of plants left but nothing was on sale! They had some pink deciduous azaleas, but I didn't want to pay full price.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

'Arctic Fire $18 at Outback/Ace Also 'Geague' $13 and red osier 'Bailii' $11.

Other plants of note remaining for Dry Shade

Diervilla lonicera $ 15
http://nativeplants.evergreen.ca/search/view-plant.php?ID=00258

Viola walterii 'Silver Gem' $5 http://www.northcreeknurseries.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.plantDetail/plant_id/548/index.h

Not necessarily for dry shade, but I can't believe no one shouted out for desiduous azalea Northern Lights 'Mandarin' 2 avail at $16 each

And, if anyone has been looking for a Katsura tree they have one as wall as a single trunk river birch, etc

One variegated Beautyberry left.

Found the Calacanthus 'Hartlege Wine' Catmint do you still want?

Willing to procure what Is left for you all and overwinter as necessary. May also be able to arrange delivery to Silver Spring area for large trees etc. No more stuffed cars. LMK!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SS and Catmint

many people cut back their Red Twig Dogwoods in early Spring like ornamental grasses . 6 inches, as best stem color is on new growth and the redder the twigs, the more 'winter interest'!

SS do you want me to get the "arctic Fire' at Ace for you?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup -- I'm dmailing you.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

yes, looks like Seasons is open till 6 pm. Happy and SSG, there must have been a dozen of them at Seasons. I'd be happy to pick them up for you! Should be able to get there sometime over the next couple days. With so many of them available, should be okay.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

oh, Coleup I'd love the Calycanthus Hartledge Wine!! :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint -- I'm dmailing you.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I don't remember seeing Arctic Fire there. I thought there was only Bailey. Do you remember if it was in a good shape? I remember seeing a shorter redtwig that I didn't like because the red coloring wasn't very good.

At Sun's, I got to see 3 different beauty berries next to each other -- dichotoma, americana, and japonica. The americana is bigger, with arching branches, and much larger leaves. I couldn't see much difference between the dichotoma and japonica.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

The japanese snowbell tree, three beautyberry shrubs, and the camelia that I got from Ace HW all got planted yesterday. Still working on the perennials from their sale and the bulbs from our group buy. Lowell's girlfriend Suzanne dug the hole for the snowbell tree for me while I was working on weeding the area and planting the shrubs. How great was that - that hole was a project in itself!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Catmint, what size are the 'Arctic Fire' at Seasons? The one at Ace is 5 gal.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SS, you may have seen the "geague', about 4' tall and a grey bark with great fall foliage colors. 'Arctic Fire had lost most of leaves already and Baileyii wasn't as red in the twig as I have seen them before.

Beautyberry americana is a native shrub. The 'Purple Pearls' cultivar is very appealing to me with its more vase shaped upright form. Lucky three of you who got one!

Happy and everyone, I'll let you all know what is still there and get your requests later today.

Aspenhill sounds so good to have such a good day to play in the dirt yesterday and such beautiful plants to plant! Bravo

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

hi, Coleup. I'm not any good at judging pot sizes, but the Arctic Fire I have planted is about 28" tall and about 21" wide.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

sigh---
haven't I been good, not jumping in? Until today when Aldi had that easy Phaelenopsis orchid with deeeeeep purple buds, marked down to 4.99. Four leaves, in bud, deeeeeep purple...

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

What a great price, Sally!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Moving on!!

Maybe some others will join in on a new thread #4 over here
