MidAt plant shopping June 2013 ...

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I hope that I can keep mine alive. right now I have them each in a large pot on the north side of the shed.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup actually I'm interested in the mountain laurel if it is still available. 3 gallon?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I'm glad you are having good luck with ebay! About how big are your mountain laurel? The ones I saw on clearance are in 5 gal pots and are about 2 1/2 feet tall by 1 1/2 wide.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Sign me up.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

cool Paul! Aspenhill and I did not see them yesterday but when
I went back today there were three of them. They are nice loojing plants! If there are any left when I go back tomorrow I'll get you one!

Any one else?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Awesome Thank you. I'm looking forward to your report of what is left too. Love the end of season sales.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Judy, my Mountain Laurels purchased from e bay were only about 7 inches high. The root system looked pretty good. I'm wondering if I should leave them out for the winter in very large pots. What do you think?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I love mountain laurels--they were everywhere in CT, where I lived for so many years! I had been assuming they wouldn't thrive as well down here because of the summer heat but it sounds like some folks have had good experiences with them?

FWIW, mountain laurel is the Connecticut state flower--I would assume it would have no trouble with our Zone 7 winters.

Roses--

Before all these houses were built here--the woods around our development
had lots of Mt. laurel in them. I remember hearing back then, already, that
it was illegal to cut any branches off of them. Same as all the Dogwoods in these woods.

I am just saying--they thrived here. So, I would not worry about their surviving
the winter. You are a whole zone cooler--I am not sure how that would impact
the survival. Do you have mt. laurels growing around you?

I DO want to comment that--putting a small plant in a really big pot, is not
a good idea. Too much soil that will get wet and not dry out will lead to root rot.
Maybe you could dig in the smaller pot it came in into a bed, in a protected area somewhere....
Maybe against your house on a AM side?

Gita

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gita,

I have them in some really well draining potting soil. Do you think they'll be ok this way in the big pot? I do have the pots against the shed, but on the north side because I was trying to avoid too much sun. Maybe at this time of the year that doesn't matter. We have mostly blazing sunshine here and the only shady areas are the ones that the shadow of the shed and house make.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup -- If there are 3 mountain laurel left, I'll take whatever is left after Paul's choice -- so please buy them all! They'd look great in our back yard!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I'd love some mountain laurel as well if there is any left!!

I wish that I lived near you, Judy. I think I'd have a new little forest!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

They sound stunning, but I'm set! Let terp and catmint have as many of the Mountain Laurels as suits them; I'll be thrilled if any are left over. I can come out to pick up -- I have to do a Meadows Farms run sooner rather than later....

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

One of the elfs is all I can buy! Lol.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I only need one as well! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Checked out some of the Clearance racks today at my HD.

Since i had heard this name before (here)--I saw a bunch of --------------

"Turtlehead Chelone" $3. They all seemed to have buds ready to pop.

There were also 4 "Red Hot Pokers"--also $3. These are in 1 gal pots,

There were a lot of "Bluebeard"--Longwood Blue. Silvery foliage. Perennial.
grows to 18"-36" and has a shrubby appearance. Hardy to -20*.

I am not, especially, offering to pick any up for you, as we do not live close.
Only Karen and sally would be so-so close.

OK! Just FYI.....Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I knew I shouldn't have had you pay me for bulbs... I'd just be sending the $ back! LOL

The 'Autumn Brilliance' serviceberry is tempting! I usually have good success with Monrovia varieties. Do you recall if they are tree-form (single trunk) or bush-form (multiple trunks)?

Fothergilla! We always see them at the Philly Flower Show and love them, then I forget to put them on my shopping list. I'd really like one, please... up to 3 if you think they look good in terms of size/shape. Thank you!

If Happy is picking up from you, maybe she can get mine also (pretty please?), and then I have an excuse to drop in on her. :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

In other news, I just got an email from Hazzard's Seeds: 10% off all perennial seeds, for those who are starting to plan their winter sowing. :-)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Ah Roses! I wish we lived closer, too, not just for the little forest effect but so we could do an afternoon or early morning visit! Hey, remember that Ric and Holly come down this way as does Jan! Both have schlepped plants for themselves and others, so there are some options. I've also been known to overwinter a plant or two for delivery at Spring swap

Speaking of overwintering, since those baby Kalmias of yours are 'evergreen' they will need to stay outside, but I would move them to a protected spot. Put their smaller pot inside a larger and stuff with leaves or spent soil as long as it drains. Set pots on a thick piece of styrofoam to keep roots warmer and pile up leaves around them as a blanket. Well, I am sure you get the point Those little guys are sturdy, but a little TLC won't hurt! Remove their blankets gradually as weather warms up in Spring

HaHaHa, I thought for sure you might bite on the hardy clumping bamboo!

This clearance sale is a necessity as this is a small garden center out behind an Ace Hardware store with no facilities for keeping shrubs and trees and perennials over winter like most nurseries. But the owner and two staff are avid plantsmen with 120 years of combined gardening experience and all of the connections and sources for plants 6 decades in the business affords one. I think they are 'unique' and cater to more selective or discerning customers. They are also willing to do 'custom orders' . They already carry plants not generally found every where...at least that's what I think.

New little forests begin in our dreams and gardens. Sure has made me dream all over again wandering through nice selections like those above.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I would also love to have some of the Fothergilla! thanks so much, Coleup!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I saw Fothergilla in bloom at Brookside this spring. So pretty! I hear they also have very nice fall foliage.

I really want to get to this nursery and check it out myself!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Me too. Is a field trip in our weekend? Other than helping Catmint move some shrubs, and the Takoma plant exchange (Sunday at 2), I'm open! And of course I'll pick up your plants, Critter!

Gita: I'm salivating over the Chelone. Might have to swing by your HD!

Oh, but I do have to plant bulbs!!!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy? Are you going to meet coleup for plants? If so could you grab my mountain laurel as well? I'll arrange for a check or something with coleup.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Absolutely -- I need a field trip, assuming Coleup is game. Catmint, Terp and Critter, just make sure I know what I should be picking up for you come the weekend....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy--

You are not that close so you can Swing by. There were a lot of them!
Most people (including me) don't even know this plant...

If you do--I always work a full day on Sunday--in garden now.
Then--half a day, maybe, on Tue. OR Wed. Not both. Not right now...

Check your local HD's and see if they may also have it.
If no one else asks me to get anything--I can do the ONE shrubby thingy...
Just don't want to have to take care of it too long...
G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, a field trip sounds like a great idea--just trying to figure out how to work it in.

I'll be driving my daughter to the Eastern Shore (way across the Bay Bridge) on Saturday afternoon-- she has a sleepover there. Coleup, where are you and this lovely nursery located?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm afraid I'm not available at all this weekend and can't even make it to the Takoma Park swap on Sunday. I have a small window of time on Friday, so I might head out then.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Catmint, I can wave to you from my house as you go past on way to Bay Bridge and Eastern Shore!

Outback Garden Center at Ace Hardware is about 15 mins South on Route 2 exit off of Rt 50

http://outbackgardencenter.com/directions.htm

Garden Center hours on Sat are 10 - 8.

I'm pretty flexible on Sat and was already planning to go to Ace to meet up with a gardening 'hero' of mine, Alan Summers former owner of Carroll Gardens and host of The Garden Club radio show who will be there to answer questions, etc. Hey Gita, remember Alan?

SSgardener can you come too?

In any event, I hope there are some goodies for each of you!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SS do you still have my cell #? Maybe I can meet you there on Fri? It is not a big place. Before 2 is best cause of paper route, but I can be somewhat flexible.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, Saturday on my way back from dropping my daughter off would work perfectly! I plan to leave there by 4:30 pm to begin the journey back across the bridge and along Rte 50. Would love to meet up and do a field trip to the nursery with you!

I'd also be happy to help with any plant transport!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Coleup, are the gardenias and the camellias from the new shipment 50% off too?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yes they are ...all 50 % off and they do have buds!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Can you set aside a camelia 'Winter's Star' for me? If there is a group meeting up on Saturday, I may actually try to get back there and join in if I can fit it in. I really liked that place and can always shop for additional things at 50% off than what I picked up the other day LOL.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I'll give you a call if I get there before 2!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Judy, I'd love the clumping bamboo that's not invasive, but I don't think I'd be able to pick them up any time soon.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy--

Do I remember Alan Summers??? Absolutely!!! He shaped much of my
knowledge I still hold on gardening. I used to listen to his radio Show every Sat.
I listened it for so long--that I knew all the answers he would give the callers...

I have, actually, driven twice to West Minister to his place. What a Junk HEAP!
This is many years ago---Bought a bare-root rose from him. Don't remember which one.

If you have never met him--he is a small, elfin-looking man with an elfin voice to match.
Very knowledgeable.

Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

So how is this shaping up? I'm happy to bring back plants for anyone who wants me to (Terp?). I am flexible Friday and Saturday.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes please.
