MidAt plant shopping June 2013 ...

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: Which is your Home Depot? Do I recall right that it is White Marsh? I don't know why that pops into my head?

Coleup: Where do you live? Can you dmail me?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, happy--
It is White Marsh. It is on rt. #40 (aka Pulaski Hwy)--3 miles east of #695.
Exit 35B off the beltway (#695).

As you come off of it--there is another HD right at this intersection.
That is the "Golden Ring" HD. A much busier store than ours.
Maybe you can stop there also--and then come back out to #40 (a light) and
head up Pulaski Hwy 3 miles.
We are in a shopping center called "Costco Plaza". Yes! There is a Costco, a Pep Boys,
a Pet Smart--and a Burger King right on the side of Pulaski hwy.

IF you are coming this far--come visit me. I am onlt 4+ miles from my HD
in Perry Hall.
I am going that way today (dr.s appt) and can pick this one shrub up for you.
More then one?
I will be working there Sunday from 8-5. Gita

Sending you my phone # via D-mail.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Happy, I live right in Annapolis (Rowe Blvd exit off Rt 50) Friday and Sat I am out and about so I would prefer to meet up at The Outback at Ace Hardware (see above for link) as that way you can shop while I get there. I should be no more than 15-20 minutes away. Morning is best for me either day. I will bring any plants to be ferried (or is that fairied ?) to you there.

Paul, Jill and Aspenhill and maybe Ssgardener may need your schlemobile! I think Catmint will pick up late Sat afternoon on way back from EasternShore.

So far, needing transport:
2 Mountain Laurel
3 Fothagila
1 Serviceberry (6 foot tall??)
1 camelia

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Does anybody have experience with Camelias in zone 6? 'Yuletide' was ringing a bell with me; I think somebody at Behnke's once told me it was one of the hardier Camelias, but I only see it listed as zone 7... ?

I know I should probably wait until I see an actual check from the survey people for the chopped trees... but I'm already shopping to replace a few of them! LOL

Happy & Coleup, if you'd please eyeball those serviceberry trees for me... wow, did you say 6 feet tall? If it's a nice single-trunk or well-shaped multi-trunk (one that I can "limb up," not an "always gonna be a bush" shape), then yes please pretty please on the 'Autumn Brilliance.'

Happy, could you please pay Coleup for me (or purchase for me if you go to the nursery), and then I'll pay you back? Thank you!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Of course on all counts.

BUT my car is just a little Nissan sedan, so I don't know how many 6' trees I can fit in it. I am very comfortable bending a plant's trunk to fit it in -- after all, it is the roots that matter -- but you may not like that. I can also try to have the trunk hang out the window. So I need your license for me to pack as best I can.

Coleup, can you dmail me your phone # and I'll dmail you mine? I may even try to make it out tomorrow.

On Camelias, the one thing I have learned is they don't like to be grown in pots, at least not at my house. I killed a bunch -- different varieties -- last year. The ones in the ground did fine. It wasn't a cold winter so I don't think hardiness was at issue.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I am a little confused about what I am picking up this weekend so I have set forth below the state of the bidding -- please confirm. If anyone else wants to add on, please let me know. I might go out tomorrow rather than wait until Saturday, assuming Coleup is free. I'm happy to pay and work out reimbursements later.

Also, I am SERIOUSLY concerned that I can't squeeze these into my car, so be forewarned. The biggest potential problem is Critter's serviceberry....

-->Terp: Mountain Laurel Elf ($15, plus tax) (I can try to drop it off at your place on my way back if you dmail me your addy) -- you're not that far off the DC beltway, are you?

-->Critter: One 'Autumn Brilliance' serviceberry ($35 is the half-price price, plus tax, but only if it's a nice single-trunk or well-shaped multi-trunk (one that I can "limb up," not an "always gonna be a bush" shape) and up to 3 Fothergilla ($14 is the half-price price, plus tax) (if they look good in terms of size/shape)
---

-->Catmint will get her own Elf and Fothergilla from Coleup (Catmint, let me know if you'd like me to pick up for you)

-->AspenHill may come out on her own to pick up a Camelia 'Winter's Star' - or do you want me to pick it up for you? Small ones have flexible trunks so I should be able to take it.
---

Anyone who doesn't have a Gardinia Kleim's Hardy should get one if they are really only $12.50 plus tax from Coleup's source. Fabulous shrub. I can pick up.... Though someone posted on-line: "The 'Kleim's Hardy' gardenia certainly has the fine fragrance of gardenia, but don't you think its flowers are pitifully ugly? I recommend that you pull the plant up and throw it onto the compost heap. Then, replace it with a 'Chuck Hayes' or 'August Beauty' gardenia that will reward you with both the pleasing perfume of this species as well as traditional, beautiful double blossoms." Just saying....

---

Reminder to self: I'm going to look for Gardenia's at Lowe's per Gita (though I may not make it to Baltimore). And "Turtlehead Chelone" ($3) if I make it to Gita's HD (though that is sounding like a long haul). And at Coleup's source, the Mountain Laurel Elf, the Camelias and Fothergilla. Maybe one Forsythia for next to driveway.

Judging by how fast plants are disapparing from this small garden center I think tomorrow morning would be best. Plus, the Garden Center manager may want to stop holding some of the plants I have set aside!

Dmailing you now Happy! Just got back from setting aside camelia and fothaergilas.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, Coleup, and others--please let me help with getting/transporting the plants!! I live fairly close to Happy, so it should all work out, and I will be driving right by Coleup on Saturday afternoon.

Coleup, in addition to the Mountain Laurel Elf and the Fothergilla, could I also get a Camellia Yuletide? Or should I just meet you at the nursery? I think it will be between 5 and 5:30. Could I get your cell # so I can call you when I'm almost there?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Critter, just got back from eyeballing the two serviceberyy they have. They are both more bush than trained as tree but with Happy'g help we'll see if the best one I set aside from you is a limb it up possibility. Also. it is the shorter one! Happy, I have transported similar size in my little cars by putting passenger seat all the way back and setting pot on the floor,

Don't know what size vehicle Catmint has but she may be able to more easily fit it in and get it up your way for Jill to pick up.???

The fothergilas look pretty good so I set 4 or 5 of them aside, too, They are about 2 1/2 fett and should fit across your back seat along with the Mountain Laurel. Camelias are 'short' enough to fit in trunk. The Lynnwood forsythias can sit on floor and hang out the window! lol, just sayin...

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, that would be huge if you could drop it off. If you could spot me temporarily to settle up with Judy I can leave some money for you as well.

I'm right off of Georgia Ave and the beltway yes by holy cross hospital. I can dmail you directions, very easy.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Looks like we will be able to get the goods to the Silver Spring roundhouse for further parceling out!!

Some last minute temptations:

Beautyberry Purple Pearls 16
Variagated with white berries ?
Clethra 'Sixteen Candles' 32
Calycanthus Hartlege Wine 27
Witch Hazel 'Jelena' 49
Hydrangea 'Bombshell' (White Flower Farms) 40

Phew, this has improved my Latin, but not my keyboard skills!

Oops, forgot to mention

azalea Northern Lights 'Mandarin' 35

Passion Flower 'Teepee Prety was $60, now $18

Phlox stolonifera 'Home Fires" was 9. now 4.50

I have a Toyota Corolla so not a huge car, but I did once (with the help of a young male who worked at the nursery) fit a hugely bushy, tall Viburnum in the back seat by putting the passenger seat down and resting it in diagonally from dashboard to rear window.

Coleup, is one of the serviceberries shorter than the other? About how tall is it? Does it have many bushy branches that add girth?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Warning Calycanthus said in general Not reliable as to scent quality. Maybe Hartlage is.

Reading along for kix but busy and not buying any

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh beauty berries are wonderful right now. I think I'm choking mine out, I planted it too close to a wood chipped path. Starving the nitrogen.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Warning -- I don't want to get my car really dirty so I don't want to squish plants into it as tightly as Coleup has described. Maybe if Coleup is willing I can pay for some plants and leave them at her house, and Catmint can take those back. I'd prefer to put most of them in the trunk and drive with the trunk part-way open....

Coleup -- what time does this place open tomorrow?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm done too, one and done.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

BTW, I'm going to stop at Home Depots along the way in search of Chelone lyonii ('Hot Lips' preferably). Gita said her store has them for $3. It is too long a haul for me to go to Gita's store, sadly. I am imagining two big patches of them. So if any of you in my neck of the woods sees them on sale for $3 at a Home Depot, would you pick them up for me? I'll promise to buy any you pick up (up to a dozen or even two if they are healthy). Deer don't eat them. They like shade but are ok in sun too. What's not to like?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

One and done?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

ooh, Coleup, can I please have a Beautyberry Purple Pearl??

And a Calycanthus Hartlege Wine??

I think I already mentioned the Camellia Yuletide!!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Only one purchase for me. I'm done.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, what is Passion Flower Teepee Pretty? Is that a hardy passiflora? Goggle is turning up nothing. I've been looking for a passion flower!

Paul, I love beautyberries!

I'd like to help with the hauling/purchasing as much as possible, but I'm still not sure of my schedule for tomorrow. The absolute earliest I could get to the nursery is 1 pm, but I may not be able to get there until 3 or so, and there's a small chance that I may not be make it at all.

I don't know how to offer to help here without making it too confusing for everyone!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Terri -- it doesn't boil down to too much -- I think we're ok. Other than the tree for Critter, and I'm just not sure about that. I'll know more when I see what I'm up against!

We haven't heard from AspenHill -- if she brings her truck, then it is easy.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

yes, I'd be happy to fit as many in my car as possible. As the mother of a middle-schooler, neat and clean are not words that I would use to describe the backseat of my car, so leaves and dirt fit right in.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

oh my I guess I missed the passionflower! I've definitely been wanting one of those--it's on my wish list; it's a host plant for fritallary and hairstreak butterflies. And what an amazing price! can I have one of those, too, Coleup?

I also am concerned about the size of the tree. SSG, how big is your vehicle?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Happy, doors open at 10 am for the garden center.

Does 10 work for you?

Neither of my local Home Depots have or ever had Chelone this year

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm pretty sure I've seen the Turtlehead at either Seasons or American Plant. I can stop by Seasons on Sunday during my daughter's volleyball game and check it out for you, Happy.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

passion flowers are on the "tropicals" clearance cart which is 70% off original price of $60. Can tell you more when I am there again tomorrow am. They had those blue Maypop flowers but I'm clueless from there!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

OK Happy, if you can take Paul's Mountain Laurel to him and any plants you acquire and pay for Jill's and Pauls plants I will have my van there to take large plants/trees and over flow for Catmint to transport on Sat.

Ssgardener I would be happy to acquire any wish list plants for you and keep them until we can meet up and exchange. Dmail me or post your 'wish list' here so I have something to go on. Can you be reached by cell or text fairly well tomorrow or Sat? Let's take some buying frenzy stress off.!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I've killed 3 camellias already, so I feel obligated to buy one more to add to the camellia graveyard! 'Yuletide' looks gorgeous! I'd like to see what else is there, though. I wanted to check out the nursery myself and see what catches my eye.

I'm still looking for a tall, pink-flowering deciduous azalea. And some dwarf conifers, a medium-height clematis, and a hardy passion flower.

No need to buy or hold plants for me, though. I don't have any availability at all on Saturday or Sunday, so I'm going to try really hard to get there tomorrow.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint -- thanks for the Chelone offer -- but it was the $3/plant price that was driving me and American Plant, at least, is unlikely to match that.... I've never been to Seasons.

Coleup-- You are the best, but I'm still not sure when I'll come, though I'm pretty sure it'll be tomorrow. I have some work I need to polish off first. Should have done it today, but ....

If they were open REALLY early I'd have tried that. But 10am is on the late side, so I'll probably try to get all my work done and then head out, leaving by 4pm at the latest.

ahem, Passionflowers? I have Maypop and it is SEERIOUSLY invasive. Got my first tiny half dead scrap at hart's swap (2007?). After it's first good year of growth, it emerged the next year up to ten feet away from the original. I now have it coming up persistently in three different regions in my yard. The only place it did not stay is under the oil tank on the shady west facing moist side of the house. But .the leaves are pretty and the flower structure amazing. Bumblebees just luxuriate in those flowers. Enjoy, with caution.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, Seasons is in Gaithersburg and has really good prices--not at all like American Plant! I'm going there anyway on Sunday to pick up some soil so I'll just take a look and see if they have any and if so, what the price is.

I do have a Chelone Lyonii in my shade garden. If you're not able to locate any now on clearance, I'd be happy to see how the plant is doing in the spring, whether it's spread enough to divide and share with you. (It was left from the previous owner, but it was struggling and I transplanted it, and it has taken some time to re-establish itself.) I know it's a long time to wait, though.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I'll probably wait on the Passiflora until I can get the kind that's hardy here. Sally, that's good to know that they spread--I'll keep that in mind, too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, LOL, this is shaping up to be quite the organizational challenge! I'm easy... if the serviceberry doesn't fit, that's OK. If Aspen-Terri ends up going out there, you can probably send my stuff back with her. LMK if I need to PayPal $ to somebody if Happy doesn't make it there. (She owes me, LOL)

I know Happy has my cell number... Coleup, did I send it to you with the directions or just my home number? I'll be reachable tomorrow and Saturday by cell phone.

Lowes in northern Frederick had the variegated blooming shrub (starts with "A" blooming now sweet scent) that Coleup brought up for me for $28, maybe they'll have some when their clearance starts, not for another couple of weeks the lady there said. I did get a sweet little Montmorrency Cherry to replace the one that didn't come out of dormancy this spring, also rescued a mini boston-type fern and an unmarked sedum from their $1 shelf. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Re Camellias.....

When I bought mine--Bernie (long dead--the guy who gave me my WS)
was with me in the garden at HD.
They had all kinds of camellias....some with a bit different leaves.
He pointed me to the one I ended up buying and said "get this one.
It will be perennial and do well for you".

I am saying this because there may be different Camellias you are looking at
and maybe not buying the most hardy ones.

As a rule--camellias hate cold winds and need to be planted in a sheltered,
somewhat shady spot. Some bloom in the spring, some bloom in the winter.
Mine blooms around March.
It faces North and gets almost NO sun. It is by my front steps with two big
shrubs on either side of it. Quite protected.
The cultivar is "Bob Hope" and it has bloomed, profusely, since 18 years ago.
Pic is from 2008.

Thanks, Gita. I remember that photo! Gorgeous plant. Camelias would be iffy in my little treeline but would probably do OK on the side of the house (not the garage side, which gets wind).

Good reminder about containers, Happy... I had 3 in containers last winter, 2 survived... I'll try to get them into the ground this fall.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I can't make it out there today, but I can go first thing Saturday morning to get there when it opens at 10:00. I can pick up Jill's stuff and drop it off at her house on my way back. My only concern is to have the camelia I wanted and the things Jill wanted actually set aside at the nursery today as it sounds like the stock is going really fast. Can happy and/or coleup take care of that when they go today, and I'll pay Ace directly on Saturday morning when I pick up?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, I had no idea passion flower was considered invasive! I might keep mine in a large container.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yea Aspenhill! I will set that up for you today!

In case I don't see you for the second time in a week, there will be a cart at the very back of the center in the SOLD area with your name on it and the plants for Jill (3 fothergillas, Serviceberry 'Autumn Brilliance' limb up able) and a Camelia 'Winter Star' for you. Chris Luther is garden center manager and I will ok it with him this am.

Since you already have the two 'ammenments' they recommend, all of those you purchase should be covered by their two year gaurantee!

If we do meet up and you have time, I can treat you to lunch at the BBQ Pit across the street and take you to my other favorite tucked away nursery just down the road from Ace.

Critter, with door to door delivery is there anything else you have a hankering for?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Happy, I will set up a cart at back area of the center reserved for sold plants for you, too.
It will have two Mountain Laurel on it, one for you and one for Paul. I have already PAID for one of them so it will be marked sold and I will get reembersed some way...only pay for one.

If you don't make it down today. hopefully you can meet up with Aspen/terri tomorrow am and I'll treat us all to lunch and whatever other plant mania we can get into!

If you decide not to come down and over this way, I will combine your cart with Catmints cart and she can ferry to Silver Spring Sat afternoon.

See, Catmint, you'll have a cart, too! And I could eat pit BBQ twice!
