Neck of the Woods CHAT Summer 2013 Part 2

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly, here are the Caladiums I ordered from you. This is before we watered them today. Two daylilies first time bloom for me this year. Sadly, NOID. Last is my beloved perennial sweetpeas that I planted many years ago and grow wild(ly) all over the hill on which we live.

Holly, here are my Musa basjoo's. We've had them for 3 years now. Love them but wish they had fruit.

Buttoneer---
WHY do you call these "Ditch Lilies"?????
Could they not be some sort of a Hybrid Day Lily?

If they, truly, originated from "Ditch Lillys"--how can they become something else so beautiful?

Maybe this question should be addressed to "Lovesdaylilies"....
YOOOO---HOOOOO---are you there????

I keep ending up with clumps of DL that colonize too much space-and then don't bloom.
Then--I have to dig them up--and now I have different containers of bulbs to share.
I need those spaces for new things....DG has so much to offer through Swaps--
and i have yo always say "No Thanks--I don't have room!"
I suppose--my best goal would be to have a FEW spectacular DL's and not clumps of so-so
Daffs and Wood Hyacinths and Tete-a-Tetes....as well as Grape Hyacinths--all over creation.
These NEVER quit!!!
I KNOW color is beautiful--but then having to deal with all the dying off foliage is a pain in the A....!

There is so much out there tempting me! All the trades and offers....cuttings of this and that....AAAAGGHH..

Gita....;o(

Thanks, Gita
I have a couple clumps of these as well---Are these also a version of Ditch Lilies???
These bloom later than the others...This clump is by my shed...

Gita, as long as I can remember. we called them ditch lilies because they grow alongside the road,

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

THEN---How do they get into one's gardens that have NO ditches around.???

Like--I live in a development--NO ditches! Lawns? Yes!
Lots of houses on the same sized plots (65'x100') with busy roads in between....

Tis a MYSTERY--I tell you!!!!! G.

I DO have Frans Hals and Tiger LIlies and "seeds" (bulbils) from both..
And-Loads of these red DL's . They are colonizing too much space also!

Gita, please send me some bulbils. In exchange, I can send you seeds of Ipomoea ochracea, the yellow morning glory. Thanks, Button

p.s. in Pennsylvania, these DL's grow wild along the roadside..

Button--
do you want the bulbils from Both if the Lilies? Frans Hals and the Tiger Lily?

No thanks on the Morning Glory....I do not want to grow any of them.
The seeds keep coming up years later.....

Have to tell you that the Frans Hals bulbils are a couple years old. Kind of dry...
You may have to re-hydrate them.
The Tiger Lily bulbils are fresh--just collected...I usually scatter them on top of some soil
in a pot and tuck it up against the house in a sunny spot. They stay out ALL winter...
If it is very cold--I throw some leaves over the pot. By spring--they are already 2" -3" tall.
Maybe I can tease away a small root section of the FH and send that to you too...
Not all of them are in bloom yet....

I am not sure I have your address...are you in the Exchange?
If not--send it to me in a D-mail...

Anything else while i am sending you things? Check my Trade List...

"Dictch Lily"? Now THAT is not very flattering. We always called them 'Roadside Lilies". haha They are so prolific. If you dig them all up and remove all the roots and rotor till it and then plant a nice bed of beautiful coleus........ NExt year... you will have a full bed or orange 'roadside day lilies', just like before you did anything. AMAZING! This is from experience at my daughter's house. I've dug mine up several times but still have a few. I left the 'double' ones. They are nice.

These two are a couple of my favorite ones. The yellow one is called 'dorthy..' something. It is quite fragrant.

I have a question about bees!

Is there a large species of bees that can't fly very well? There were a ton of butterflies, moths, and bees all over the garden yesterday, but I kept hearing this THUNK sound. I looked around and saw large bees that couldn't quite make it over the 6 foot fence and kept whacking their bodies on it. It would take them a few tries to either go over or around it. What kind of bees were they, and why are they so bad at navigating??

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

SS, that is too funny! :-D I was also noticing huge bumble bees out yesterday, but fortunately no thunking sounds!

I found this in Wikipedia about carpenter bees being very clumsy:

"Males spend many hours guarding their territory against other males, hovering about the nests for hours on sunny days. They sometimes attempt to mate with other insects or small birds." -wiki article
Thanks for the laugh, catmint and SSG! That was hilarious.

"Males spend many hours guarding their territory against other males, hovering about the nests for hours on sunny days. They sometimes attempt to mate with other insects or small birds." -

LOL--and sometimes even with wooden fences! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I try to get them with a fly swatter--but hey are too fast! Sometimes I get them..

Sometimes, I spray wasp and hornet spray right in the holes.

If they are more ground level--I bang a dowel piece in the holes so no
new bees can get out when they hatch.

My shed supports are just about crumbling because of these borer bees...
NO mercy here!!!...........:-z

Let me tell you how you can knock out Carpenter bees: Just buy yourself one of those electric tennis rackets & when you see them flying at you, just poosh the "button" & whack 'em! Works like a charm.

Gita, let me check your trade list & I'll get back to you and Holly, thanks for the delicious lunch, the dip in your pool, & the plants. Now we gotta pray for rain. It's keeping us busy with the soaker hose in the veggie garden & dunking my hanging pots in the rain water, which is dwindling. Buttoneer.

I went to see the corpse flower at the Botanical Gardens today!

Unfortunately, it was not very stinky because I went during the day, and the scent is supposedly much stronger in the evening. In fact, I couldn't smell anything at all, and I got *really* close.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

How crowded was it? I was thinking about going down.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, there was quite a long line to get into the conservatory, but it moved very quickly. I don't think I waited in line for any longer than 10 minutes.

There was a large a crowd inside, but most people would take 2-3 pics and move aside, so I was able to get right up front pretty quickly.

There was literally no smell at all when I went in the mid afternoon, so it probably makes sense to later in the day. But I think they're expecting the flower to collapse in the next 12-24 hours!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

How tall is the center thing? Can't tell from photos.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I would say it's about 6-7 feet tall plus the container which was about 2 feet tall, so about 8-9 feet tall, maybe taller?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

How cool, SS! I guess this is the first time it's bloomed since 2007? What an experience to see it, with or without smell!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat--
I thought they only bloomed once in their lifetime......G.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I heard that it smells only for 10 hours or so at the beginning of coming into full bloom, and that's it for the smell. And as it happened, those hours occurred last night, when the Botanical Garden was closed.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

The pamphlet said that this one was started from a donated seedling in 2005.

Gita, apparently they do bloom more than once in their lifetime, but the bloom cycles are irregular and vary from every few years to decades.

Happy, that's disappointing :(

I thought the scent was supposed to come back tonight.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

cool, guess I would be kinda glad NOT to smell it ^_^

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

From what I read, the smell was horrible when it first bloomed on Sunday--the gardener who was there when it opened talks about gagging and nausea-- so maybe it's best that the scent had lessened when you say it, SS! :-o

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

The only reason I went was so I could gag on the smell! I seriously wanted to experience it! :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I think they are beautiful I could do without the smell.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL
I also love your spirit SS!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

ssgardener -- I tried to find the report that said the stick doesn't recur -- it was on WAMU -- but can't find it on-line. It was on air yesterday I think around 4pm.

Did you make it down again yesterday?

This site seems to think the smell lasts for only 6 to 12 hours.

ROTFL!!!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses -- yes, that's consistent with what I heard.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--You went so you could gag? You are weird!.....
Hope you were not serious.... G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy and Roses, you're both right -- the scent is only supposed to last through that first night of blooming.

The literature that I read said that the scent was strongest in the evening/night, so I mistakenly thought they meant the scent would get stronger again after sunset. I was in the city with a friend so I didn't go back last night, but we did enjoy the rest of the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

Gita, believe it or not, I *really* wanted to experience the smell of "rotting elephants!" I find it so interesting that I wanted to get just a whiff of it, and hopefully from far enough away that it wouldn't actually make me sick. :) So I was truly disappointed that there was absolutely zero scent. I got up really close, leaned in, and took in a deep breath, but nothing!

There have other varieties of stinky arums, so I'll be ready when the next one blooms!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

help with house flies?

Not to change the subject but does anybody know how long it takes for Tiger lilies to produce ripe seeds after it , blooms?
