Neck of the Woods CHAT Summer 2013 Part 2

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

*sigh*
Oh Coleup, harbinger of hosta holocaust.... My next door neighbor's hosta has the classic inkbleed symptom. The only thing separating my babies from theirs is a chain-link fence.

However, it is good to know that the virus is mechanically-transmitted and that there's no insect vector. I'll mention it to my neighbor but I'm not going to freak out if they refuse to dig it up. Shouldn't be too hard to keep my hostas safe from them b/c we don't share tools.

I will be diligent about keeping my tools clean, especially because I like to divide and share my hostas. It's also nice to have that information when i purchase new ones or receive hostas in trade to "quarantine" them for a year or so.

So thanks, Coleup. Sorta.... ;)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

lol Karen, I see my reputation has preceeded me again. Yep, I am known in these here parts as a harbringer of news we don't want to know! (Hosta virus, Coleus Downy Mildew, Impatiens Downy Mildew, Rose Rosette Disease, and several others!)

Of those 3 Monkeys: Hear no evil, See no evil, and Speak no evil I generally leave well enough alone. but do speak up when others may be hurt or harmed.

Guess I'll just continue balancing things out with my good looks and delightful humorous posts! (I'd do it with photos, but my cell phone pics leave much to be desired, so I'm told)

Thanks for your willingness to become informed and stay alert! And happy Hostaing!

Judy

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Judy, are you so well informed by profession or passion? I know a bit about plant pathology and diseases of agriculturally important crops because of my profession, but it's hard to keep tabs on every pathogen that pops up on ornamentals.

Keep the harbinger'ing coming!

Karen--

A picture speaks a thousand words.....
Here is a link to the Post-Plant Swap (May 19th at jan's in NJ) with loads of pictures.

Thanks for resurrecting this "Saga'.....I just read all of it again. Very funny!
HOW could I bookmark THIS ONE Thread for posterity somewhere in My Documents?

Sally will KNOW! I KNOW she will KNOW!!! Sally KNOWS everything!!!
I don't KNOW how she KNOWS, but I Would like to KNOW!

My brain works differently-----like:
Did you know that "KNOW" spelled backwards makes "WONK"?

--Like--a bunch of geese crossing the road would be going..."wonk...wonk...wonk...."

--Or--when you get all congested and have to call out from work--you might say:
"I wonk be able to come into wonk today--because I wonk to go to see my Doctor."

And--now I better run and hide....cause I don't 'wonk" to read what you all think is wrong with me...

Dr. said--"Actually--NOTHING!!!! Just a slight case of "GNIHTONITIS"--
Take 2 Aspirin and go to bed...You'll be fine in the morning.....

I feel much better knowing that! There's still hope!
Atig

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks for putting faces to the names, Gita! I'm sure we'll meet soon!

The birthday card is really cute too, even though I don't get the inside joke :)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--
WHAT inside joke??????? Something about the card????
What don't you get? Did you read the "Sally's Left Arm" Post (the link)

Was it the "KNOW" thing???
I just made that up--as I can have a weird mind...sometimes...
I get silly...but, to me--that's OK too...Life is too serious--too often.
Frivolity is healthy for the mind...

Gita, I'm beginning to wonder about you lol...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Diane, don't wonder too far you may get lost! LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ahhh-Ric!
priceless.... One who understands.......

Diane,
Ric is right. if you wander too far--you may end up "Gone With the "Wind".......
Haaaaaaaaaa...haaaaaaaaa.....chuckle.......Get it?

Personally--I think it is the heat! My brain is getting fried....
and all the "juices" are running down my neck and my face....

G.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Don't push too hard out there, Gita. I thought I was having a great time catching up with everything that needed to get done (been doing LOTS of baby sitting for grandchildren who had surgery and who had parents traveling for work) and it knocked me on my butt for 2 days!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Just 2 days? LOL.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric and I have both been outside working today. Him a lot more than me. I am tackling a big weed job and he push mowed the back yard, watered and weed whacked. Both of us taking breaks in the house mine longer than his and than his. Then we both hit the pool for a nice cool down and he is heading for a nap and I am chilling and watching HGTV yard makeover shows that I recorded.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

sounds good Holly. !
We've been out a lot too despite the heat...just put a cake in the oven. Done working for the day!!! But playing with plants isn't quite working. I just played; didn't do any real chores like all that pruning needed.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

The heat is so oppressive today. I got a half pallet of stone yesterday, and I tried working on a small stacked stone wall today but didn't get very far. I usually don't mind the heat if I stay hydrated and take frequent breaks, but even in the shade it was too much for me. I gave up about 11:00 and have spent the rest of the day inside reading and napping, and now catching up on DG. Welcome to the mid-atlantic forum Karen and nice seeing you post too Darius!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I "killed" myself yesterday--
Started at 9"30AM with mowing the lawn--sweapt the sidewalks--watered everything--
Took a couple DG breaks--then went back outside. Potted and planted till about
5:30PM.
Had to find places for all the sales loot I got at the Greenhouse. Lots of digging
and yanking out of tree roots. That is a hard job. Still 2 plants to go...OH, MY!!!

However--there was a nice breeze going all day--and some of the work was done
in the shade of my trees and Patio.
I was soaked!!! Came in and took a shower and that was that.

Today--I went out to just check on everything. It is 100* on my thermometer!
Been hiding inside all day.
Guess what i been doing????? Playing through my collection of 45's to see
which ones i want to record. Almost half way through--have about 50.
Such a trip down Memory lane....like, these are the originals by all the artists...

When Benita and Mathew were here visiting--he seemed very interested to have
this whole little carry-case of them...SO 50's and 60's!
But--I wanted to go through them and see what i could record on a CD.
Then--I will mail everything back to them in a flat rate box.

Mathew likes old music....Do you remember?......
"Jumbalaya--Cofish Pie-a--Filet Gumbo--Today I'm gonna see my-my Chere Mio....
Remember the song--"It's hard to be Humble"....or Harry Belafonte's
"Island in the Sun"? "Never on Sunday"..."I'll Walk the Line" by Johnny cash...
All such treasures....

OK! Break is over.... Gita
Sally--thanks for the link in the D-mail...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oldies can be such fun and waxing melancholic never hurts too much either.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I totally---absolutely---unequivocally-- second that, Ric!
Takes one to know one........:o) G.

Hmmm---I wonder if i will ever, seriously, find an Avatar that
unequivocally represents ME?????? Hard......

Not too many of us left without one. Paul does not have one ...
Neither does typwc--coleup--ssgardener--Holly and Happy--
and coleuslover. That is just from checking this Thread.

I know!!! I know!!!! We all are too unique to need pictures to identify us by....

I just cannot think of anything that i would like to have next to my name every time I post.....

Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Where were you the first time you heard: "Indian Lake"
"The Letter"
Name a Harold George Belafonte, Jr. song?

Were you ever "In the Mood"

Do you remember the haunting of "Apache" by Sonny James?

In what movie was "Also sprach Zarathustra (Strauss)" used as the theme after dumping Alex Norths' score?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ric--

I don't know any of those songs or people.....
I think we lived in 'different worlds"......with different tastes..G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Ric, you had me on the George Belafonte, Jr. one, but finally, daylight come and I want to go home. Sneaky.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

"Indian Lake" The Cowsills hanging out with 45s summer of 68
"The Letter" The Box Tops juke box before school 67
"The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," Harry Belafonte "King of Calypso "
"In the Mood" Glenn Miller Orchestra (#1 in 1940)
"Apache" by Sonny James, 1961, better known as an awesome instrumental by The Shadows.
"Also sprach Zarathustra (Strauss)" 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968
Gita, I'm sure you will recognize a few now, David, with the dawn he'd go thundering by, good call.
My musical interest are all over the place Wagner one day, Acappella the next. LOL

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I'm with you, Ric. Years ago someone downloaded music for me and I have discs with: Madame Butterfly (Maria Callas), Sleepy Lagoon (Harry James), I'll Be Around (Spinners), Aranquez (Paco De Lucia and Al Di Meola), I'm Confessin' That I Love You (Thelonious Monk), Samba Pa Te (Santana)...etc, etc.

Much better than a whole CD with one artist!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My taste in music is also varied, but no Rap and any C-W is vintage. I have a decent collection of classical music and opera, often wonder who will want it when I'm gone.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

My daughter took piano lessons for years. We would do our housework on Saturday with the music from a whole set of classical long playing records. Kids get an ear for whatever music they're exposed to.

Mount Laurel, NJ

I didn't know ANY of those songs mentioned, except "I'll walk the line" by Johnny Cash. I love country music. I am usually playing something by Books and Dunn, which I think is THE BEST!! Currently "Boot Scoot Boogie" is playing.

Hmm, I'll have to look into how one selects an avatar.....Ok, found it. It'll have to be a coleus of course. The one in the vase is 'hot sauce'.

The coleus in the picture (below) is 'saturn'. When in sunlight it seems to turn darker.

Most of the music in my family happened on the 4th of july (my dads Bday!)when relatives and friends would gather at our house in the country for a day long picnic. As it got dark we would build a bonfire and roast marshmallo and the adults would start to sing the old songs with my dad playing ukelele. 1910, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. Other exposure was at church and choir...hymns, cantatas, etc...carols in English and German, and Vacation Bible School where the Baptists sang lots of 'spirituals' (This Little Light of Mine. Do Lord, ...) And weddings! The waltz and hours of polkas and then Fox Trot and two step, Big Band stuff.

One aunt used to sing with Paul Whiteman Band, Uncle D and his brothers had a polka band where he played accordian. Lets see, steel slide guitar, pump organ, bass fiddle, and almost everyone piano all 'by ear' not lessons. If there was a piano we would have a sing along switching out players and 'doodley doing' any forgotten words or verses.

Other early influences were kids songs and nursery rhymes put to music. Then with the advent of TV, "The Hit Parade" (Anyone remember Snooky Lanson or Giselle McKensey?)

My own personal departure from family music happened early on (4 yrs old?) when after everyone had gone to bed, I would sneak over and turn on the radio and listen oh so quietly to what ever was on...living in rural Illinois, that would be The International Barn Dance or the Grand Ole Opry!

In eigth grade Rock and Roll hitwith Bill Haley and 'Rock Around the Clock", my first record purchase Elvis "Don't Be Cruel"/Hound Dog'

I do believe I was born at just the right time to have such incredible first hand experience with so much music as so much of the 'oldies but goodies' were brand new!

Did want to mention that I was priviledged to attend a Harry Belafonte/Miriam Makeba concert almost 50 yrs ago now. And I could actually see them. And as old becomes new again, here is a link to the song my DGS couldn't wait to teach me last summer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLqb64Pb9So

lol, I might consider an old folks home if they have lots of singing! Sometimes I wonder why we don't have sing alongs or music at our Swaps?!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Methinks these get-togethers should last a whole weekend. Music is so heart- warming and body-moving and soul-stirring and...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, WOW! So much to comment on....Just got home from work---

Ric--
I have NEVER paid attention to WHO is singing anything--or what the title of thr
song is (with many exceptions), but--if I heard it--I would know it.
it iss so odd--way back in the 50's and 60's--I loved all these great old songs
and always sang along. Now--when I hear them, i can still sing along. Amazing
how your brain can retrieve something like words to a song after 50 years!
Of course--i DO remember the "Banana Boat Song" Dayyy-Ohhhh..."

Another reason I don't know too many of the old songs is that, in the first
ten years, or so, in the USA--I was always listening to German and Latvian music.
Love the old German Schlagers!!! Romantic music that came out after WW-2.
I still listen to Freddy Quinn on my cassettes in the car. Freddy was about the same
vintage as Montovani or Mitch Miller.

To me, back then and even now, if I cannot sing along to a piece of music (songs)
then it is not music I would like. NOT talking about instrumentals--which I used to listen to.
But--like screaming rock or rap--NO! That is NOT music to me.

Judy--your childhood sounds awesome! Music is so important to the Soul.

The only thing I remember about Miriam Makeba is that she had a 4-octave range of a voice.

****I Totally second the idea of sing-alongs at out Swaps. Maybe at someone's house
that can have a bonfire? Who will bring the accordion? I have a mouth harmonica--
but it is only in the key of G and C. One each side....
I fell in love with the Mouth harmonica at age 8 when we were staying with some German farmers
as newly arrived refugees from Latvia. The lady of the farm had a small one and could play it.
I believe she gave it to me---not sure.
I even got to milk a cow every day--go hunting for eggs in all the haystacks in the fields
and climb up in the hay loft in the barn. I was in heaven!!!

What was the topic of this Thread again??????? Gita

Wow, love all the tales and comments about music! Despite the fact that I cannot carry a tune, I often sing aloud when making long trips in my truck (no radio) but doubt I'd join a sing-alone for fear of being stoned, although I'd enjoy listening immensely.

I was fortunate when I lived in Bawlmer to attend many events at both Merriweather Post Pavillion and Wolf Trap, and some in-theater musical performers in DC and Baltimore. These were all current musical groups of the 60's and 70's, I saw the Eagles when they were unknown band and the opener for Yes at Merriweather Post Pavillion. The keyboard artist for Yes did a really long solo (almost an hour) that climaxed during a huge thunderstorm while he was working in parts of the Hallelujah Chorus.

But my real popular music exposure started when my boyfriend came home from the Air Force to Miami when I was graduating from high school.

Howie got a job in a fancy hotel on Miami Beach, and over the next year or two, I got to attend hotel shows starring (one by one, not all together) Nat 'King' Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, Mahalia Jackson, and a few more I scarcely remember. Frank Sinatra was one, and I'd just as soon forget I saw him.

Belafonte did a duet (1961 but I didn't see it in person) with Odetta, "There's a Hole in the Bucket" and of course I learned all the lyrics. I sang it and danced with it to my sister's kid many times when she was very young and she'll probably sing it to her kids (if she ever has any).

I have NO clue where my love of classical music and opera comes from, certainly not from my family. Perhaps some of it is from playing bassoon in high school orchestra, the only instrument they had available for poor kids. It didn't replace the trumpet/coronet I wanted but I learned to like it. Our band and orchestra director had been in John Phillip Sousa's band.

Hey All!!!

MY TOAD IS BACK!!! He has been gone for over two weeks.
Thought he may not have liked it over here--but there he was today--still in the same,
little corner on the steps. Found him a fat slug---he gobbled that down..
Hope he now may consider my house his home....The clay pot home I made for him is still there...

Also--WOW! I saw a black snake around the kitchen side bed...not too big a one.
I have not seen a snake in my garden since 2006!

Hope the snake doesn't eat my Toad........he is pretty big.....

That's enough excitement for today! G.

Thought I'd join the party too. First picture is a "Double" Ditch lily. 2nd is my Black Petunia, 3rd is Asclepias incarnata, seeds I sowed last year and now beautiful big blooming plants, 4th is my Dwart Cavendish Banana, & 5th is one of my Semp community pots. This has been a wonderful year for growing & I love it! Bobbin & I are both healing nicely & I realize now I had a premonition & a bad feeling about going to the plant swap last February. Should have listened to my senses. Owell, live & learn. Buttoneer

Glad to hear you two are healing well. Doing a happy dance for you.

Button---

That double ditch Lily looks very much like 2 I have....I call these my Stump Lily--
just so you know in case you read some other Post....
These growright behind my concrete Bird bath and on both sides of the split rail fence
that borders my "YUK" bed....It is also the end of my property.

These Lilies have been there forever--and I THINK I remember that, at one time,
they were just single blooms. Now they are gorgeous!!! I also have these in my long side bed
whish gets full sun all day. I must have planted a few bulbs of these--there--as I don't remember
(I say that a lot--but--I forget WHY?...:o) that they were there 2 years ago.
These 3 Lilies gad the biggest, lushest leaves I have ever seen!!! And the bloom stalks were
4' tall. Mamma Mia! The flower is similar to yours and also to my other ones.

I am soooo interested that you grew the Ascilepsis from seed!!!
--Did you seed it directly in the bed last year?
--Did it come up this spring and grew big enough to bloom???

I have always wanted this plant--but right now--I would not have a place for it.
I have stuffed my beds full od annuals--just go look at the July Blooms Thread here.
If you plan to come to the seed Swap next year--I will take some seeds.

Tell me how to grow it, please....Gita

Here are the Lily pictures. They are too pretty to be "DItch Lilies".
1-&-2 my Stump Lilies--Very similar--just a tad of difference in the orange patterns in the bloom
3&4--The liliies in my S. bed with the tall stems. has to be the same lily--and I planted it...

Hi Gita, Remembeer that Epi you gave me? I can't remember if it was the seed swap in Feb or the plant swap in May but I wanted to show you how well it is doing on my home-made banana skin cocktail. Wow! You have Double Ditch lilies, too. They are much more beautiful than the single ones. No, I germinated the Asclepias seeds last year & planted the seedlings in the flower bed last year. I am well-pleased with the results and yes, I'll be glad to share some seeds with you.
