Mint plant turning yellow

I was given a mint plant in a 5 gallon pot by some friends. It was nice and green when I got it but now it is turning yellow and starting to flower. What is making it turn yellow? As I live in N. Las Vegas and it's been very hot here already, I water it in the morning. It is on my deck which faces East and only gets the morning sun. Am I watering it too much? It seems if you miss watering potted plants here once, it will be dead tomorrow, but then I've been known to kill them with kindness!

Thanks!

Looks like it is outgrowing its pot, I'd repot in a larger container, you also may be underwatering it, it is totally dried out by the afternoon?

They actually do even grow in water, as I just saw this Sunday at Longwood Gardens

The friends I received it from had divided one of their plants and potted this part. I am always afraid of over watering them as I do have a tendency to do that! I've been watering them all in the morning as they get the morning sun. Maybe I should water a little in the evening as it's usually so dry here (humidity around 2-5%) and it's been 100 or better every day. Thanks for your help!

It may also be adjusting to being transplanted and possibly getting less sun than it was used to. Watering in the morning is a good thing to do. You may want to set a saucer under the plant and let it catch the run off. Let the plant sit in the saucer water for about 30 minutes, that will allow the roots and soil to absorb as much water as they need. Then empty the saucer and watch for additional run off. That should give you a clue as to how much water the plant needs. From then on, just stick your finger down in the soil about 3 inches....if it is moist, check again in the evening or next morning. Water when you do not feel moisture at finger depth.

Spearmint and Peppermint really love the water.
I would try watering it twice a day. And put a saucer under it to catch and hold the water. A saucer under it, with water, is not bad, as long as the water is kept fresh. Water it thoroughly, so the water is really pouring out, and this will flush out any old water.
Pinch out the flowers. When a plant is growing flowers it will not grow roots as much or as well. Since this was divided recently I would want to keep it growing roots a bit longer.
