What is this bug??

Kings Park, NY

And why is it on my eggplant and zucchini only? Just so happens both plants are doing very poorly, and have a lot of yellow spots on them. So far I have tried neem oil and also released a bunch of lady bugs to no avail. Any advice as to what these beetle like critters are, and what I could use to prevent them from killing my plants?

Could well be Cucumber beetle. There are striped and spotted species. They spread diseases to the plants, as well as eating the leaves, flowers and fruit.
Row covers or individual plant covers when you first plant will keep the adults off so they cannot lay eggs.
Pyrethrum is one pesticide to spray.

I have seen ads for traps, but I do not know how effective they are.

Looks like a striped cucumber beetle.

I garden organically so let the good bugs take care of the bad bugs. Here's a link that might help with predators of cucumber beetles.
