Should I pinch back my phlox? If so, how do I do this and is it too late in the year. I am in zone 6 in Michigan. They are about 2.5 feet tall. Thanks.
Phlox David's Lavendar
So, why are you thinking you'd need to do this? Phlox paniculata does get quite tall.
I read somewhere that it is advised as it create bushier growth. I planted these last year and did not pinch. I did deadhead after blooming.
I also read somewhere else that after the first bloom the plant should be cut down by half, so I am just not sure what to do with it. I am fine with the height of the plant.
It is true that by pinching out the growing tips when small and tender, this makes the plant produce more side shoots to compensate for the loss of growing tip, BUT, normally this is done when the plants are newly germinated or have only some leaves on young growth, for instance, I grow several types of Fuchsia's, every spring when the new growth begins to grow, I nip out all the tint growing tips on each stem / branch so this will encourage lots of side shoots to form giving me a nice bushy plant or more stems to form on the trailing type, you can do this with lot's of plants so long as it is done at the right stage of growth and that's normally early in the season.
I have never done this with Phlox, but have removed the old flowering stem and can be luck enough to get a second flowering stem but, on the secondary growth, the flowers are never as good as the first but at least you do get another flowering with luck.
Hope this helps you out a bit.
Best Regards.
WeeNel.
Thanks that does help.
