Isolated spots in various garden areas have a fungus 3 - 4 inches below the surface. There are no obvious fruits but the fine white web-like threads are clearly visible . They are also HIGHLY smellable. The soil has a strong mushroom smell, not mold, not mildew. This soil is sandy/silty through-out the garden. (Truckloads of a wide variety of organic stuff are only partly effective). It is remains quite alkaline, surprising in the Pacific Northwest. The fungus can be found in damp or dry patches. I've worked on this garden for 22 years. Annuals and perennials will not grow. I've tried them all. Until I can get rid of this alien I shall continue to have some very bare patches in highly visible spots.
Hydrogen peroxide seems a very short term fix. Has anyone ever heard of a similar situation. Any ideas? Tell me all.
