Almost all of my small city garden is a set of raised beds around two sides of a patio. These are deeply shaded and invaded by foliage and roots of a coppiced Norway Maple clump. The only thing I've found so far that grows, after the spring tulips stop blooming are lamium, a climbing hydrangea, a struggling ajuga. Everything else has died or is on its way out. Zone 6 in Zip Code 01950/ northeastern Massachusetts. Is there any help? PS: I don't like plastic flowers!
What flowering plants will thrive under Norway Maples.
Annual color for shade includes Impatiens, Begonia and Coleus. Fuchsia is actually a perennial, but is frost tender. If you can overwinter it out of the freezing weather or get new ones each year, they can be quite showy.
All these are great in raised beds or pots (as long as the pots are large enough).
Perennials might include Hosta, Pulmonaria, Liriope, Berginia, many Ferns and many others, but I do not know which are suited to your zone.
Shrubs for shade include Azaleas, Pieris, Rhododendron and others. Again, gotta research your zone for compatible plants.
The important thing is that no plants are going to do well where the tree roots are. Maples can be quite greedy, taking the majority of the water and fertilizer. Growing things in raised beds and pots is the way to go.
