Bell pepper blight??

Sugar Land, TX

Hello all,

Firstly, please note that I am an absolute novice. This is the first year when I have tried planting vegetables in what otherwise is a hackneyed backyard. It has been great fun, and I am learning a lot.

So If this question sounds naive, pl bear.

I planted a few bell pepper plants two months ago. They grew and thrived and yielded their first fruit. Everything was good. Then suddenly they go dormant. No more flowers, buds or signs of a further produce.

Then finally one sprouted a bell pepper. But after a few days, it split. The skin cut open and exposed the vegetable's pulp.

Other than that, the leaves are fine and the plants appear ok.

Any ideas on what is happening? Is there a pest in the patch? I have scrounged the soil but absolutely nothing came up.

Pl help.

I have learned that bell peppers can get blossom end rot, just like tomatoes. Try adding some dolomite lime (calcium) to the soil and see if that will help them. It won't hurt them...

Please report back on your progress, and stay in touch. I'm in SE Houston near Pearland, and wouldn't mind helping you along.

P.S. Two months ago the temps were still fluctuating wildly here. I kept my peppers inside until the temps stabilized. Planted them out about 3 weeks ago, with a second batch ready to go into the garden this weekend...

BPs are HEAT lovers...

Please don't add lime unless you know you have acidic soil. It is so alkaline in this part of Tx they don't even sell it. A pic would be great. Have you had a lot of rain lately?
