Holly-tone on large azaleas and rhododendrons

These plants have grown past their original planting beds and the outer branches extend over grassy areas.

If I want to apply Holly-tone at the drip line, this will be over the grassy areas.

Do I apply over the grassy areas? Or do I pull up the grass in those areas and then fertilize?

I appreciate any advice
