what type of pepper is this?

Belleair, FL(Zone 10a)

I bought these pepper plants at Walmart when they were a few inches tall & they were labeled jalapeno peppers but I don't think that's what they are. Can any one tell me what they are?

My first guess would be banana pepper. You may have to taste to determine whether it is a hot or sweet type.

I am with farmerdill looks to be sweet or hot wax banana pepper but absolutely not jalapeno.

St Peters, MO

I've grown Banana peppers before and they looked like the ones pictured. Definitely not jalapeņos.

OK. I tried 1 & it seemed a bit bitter but maybe I picked it too soon. How big should they be when they are ready to be picked?

Try waiting till they turn color, likely to yellow or yellow-green if they're banana peppers.

Actually Banana peppers start out yellow green , turn yellow, and ripen to red.

That explains why they tasted so bad. Good to know! I.ll make sure I wait for them to turn color next time. Thanks!

They also taste great green, they do not have to be ripe.

Taste is relative to lot's of different folks I enjoy them all colors as long as they are crisp. I like the yellow green stage fried and the rest chopped in salad or meat loaf, also plain like a carrot.

I tried them at the stage pictured (green-yellow) & they were really bitter. Maybe it was too green but next time I.ll definitely wait longer cuz I couldn't use them with that bitter taste.

Ah, sorry, Farmerdill, shouldn't have spoken when I actually haven't grown them myself. I just knew that's how they sell them. Anyway, whatever they may be, your best chance of them tasting better is when they turn color I would say. Some people do like peppers at all stages but I'm one who doesn't even like bell peppers green and I will say I think even green bell peppers have a hint of bitterness.

No problem. Both Sweet and Hungarian Wax types are normally used as immature peppers. Very popular for pickling. Every one has different taste buds, so need to try for a variety and stage that they like.
