Help Caterpillars are taking over my plants!

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Good morning everyone, I have a serious caterpillar problem,( Im sure alot of you can relate). I really dnt want 2 hurt them nor my plants. What is the most natural way to get rid of them. They start eating the young leaves to the adults, I know egg shells help with the slugs and snails, but what sort of natural mixture can i use on the leaves and the stems themselves, without hurting the plants. Thanks and HAPPY GARDENING!!

Look into BT- Bacillus Thuringiensis. It works well if you start early enough.
And pick them off by hand.

I dont like hurting most bugs either, even a wasp is saved if it comes indoors, I catch it in a container with lid and let it go outside as most bugs are beneficial to our plants BUT I draw the line at caterpillars as they eat more than you can gather from the veg patch.
I gather them by hand and drop them into a bucket of boiling water, OR put them into a container and feed the birds, that's even better than the boiling water.

2 years ago the first lot of cabbages and Brussel Sprouts were wasted by the white butterfly's laying eggs of there caterpillars, they eat a monstrous amount of holes in the green veg and it takes them only a few weeks to eat the whole patch if you leave then to it.

I tried setting up bird feeding stations right beside the veg patches but it helped as the birds awaiting to feed found the bugs but the bugs were hatching faster that the birds could chirp good morning.
there is no easy answer unless you want to resort to sprays etc but, I don't go that way especially where edible plants are concerned.
Wish I could help you more but maybe someone else will come in with the kind of answers to suit you.
Best regards, WeeNel.

What plants are being eaten?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

and what type of caterpillar?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Good question Guy's, I stupidly thought it would be same problem I have and my bug bare is the white butterfly that lays eggs on the veg patch, these tiny green hatched caterpillars from the Cabbage White can munch their way through half the veg before you even notice you have them, it's always wise to try identify what type of butterfly / moth has laid the eggs for the type of caterpillar you have as I certainly don't want to kill off the beautiful butterflies than follow on from the caterpillars, searching on line or library is always good places to start identification IF all else fails.

IF it is the veg patch, it could be these bugs I've mentioned.
Best of luck, WeeNel.

I asked what's being eaten since that's the easiest way to ID what it is. Different caterpillars eat different plants. I'd want to know it wasn't going to turn into a desirable butterfly before harming it, like WeeNel said. Most that eat veggies are up to no good though.
