Fruit of Flowering Quince

BATTLEBORO, NC

Are you familiar with uses of this fruit? I know they are VERY tart.
Does it ever get soft as an apple?
I wonder if the fruit can be cut up as an apple can be.
Last year it was real hard, but managed to whittle enough to cook 4 jars into jelly. Had most as waste due to blight.

The quince grown as an ornamental (Chaenomeles) is not toxic, but is not grown for delicious fruit, either. You did good to get a few jars out of it. Many of the hybrids do not produce fruit.
On the other hand, quince grown for edible fruit (Cydonia and Pseudocydonia) are much more productive, larger fruit, and perhaps a bit tastier. They are still used cooked (canning, pies...) where you add sugar, though. They are still hard and tart when they are ripe.

btw, I plan to remove much foliage as the air doesn't circulate well, it is so dense. Anyone wishing some cuttings, I'll have lots to get rid of?
Hopefully we'll enjoy the fruit without blight this time. I like the tart jelly on toasted beagles.

Of Chaenomeles, how does one determine type? (Cydonia or Pseudocydonia)
