Garlic harvest- 1st time

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's part of my garlic harvest. I left them in the ground too long, judging by the cloves that are separating in some of the heads. I should have pulled them out of the ground when the leaves turned brown, but I got side-tracked and let them go a few weeks more.

Can all of these be saved? How should I cure the ones that have separated? The soil was not as loose as I thought (something to improve on next time) so they have clay-like mud on them. I want to just rinse them off, but I will not.

Your garlic looks great. No worries about those loose cloves.
Do not wash the cloves.
Let them air-dry in a shade spot on your back porch.
After they are all dry I remove the soil with my hands trying to be careful. I also cut a few of the roots away.
Make sure that the stems are all dry before you will store them inside.
I store them in one bathroom that is dark and cool.
I bunch maybe 10 together with an elastic and I secure them to a clothe hanger and hang on the shower rod in my dark bathroom.
I also started to pull my garlic ... but I stop and went to check my calendar by the moon.
I will have to harvest the rest next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday which they are ROOT days. In this way they will store better.

Here also a picture of last year harvest in the bathroom (with the onions too)

Nice harvest, John. I'm planting garlic this fall and hope to have a good harvest. drthor, those are very decorative in the bathroom. Looks good. :) I think I will have to store mine in the basement in order to find a dark enough place.

Thanks for the advice, drthor! I feel better about my harvest.

Nice harvest. Love the picture of the garlic/ onions hanging in the bathroom, great idea.

Thanks, Cville. I'm glad I decided to grow garlic- can't wait to try them. I just need to amend my soil so it is not so gumbo-y next time.

I bought my garlic at Sam's club. It was from California. I spent $4.
