Cactus disease ID and treatment.

Tucson, AZ

Hi all,

I bought several of these as investment. It's so rare to see them and they'll fetch a few dollars on Ebay :-). Now I'm worried my investment is all going down the tubes. In the past week or so, several of the plants have developed pinhead to 1/8 inch size brown or black spots. The spots are raised and hard. Strangely, it seems to be mostly on the older growth. Insects, fungus? There's no sign of spider mites or mealy bugs, cacti and succulents worst nemesis. I don't know what to do. I'll be taking cuttings of unaffected growth off all the affected plants. And I've quarantined all of them. Any ideas.

Note; I've also posted this over on the Cacti and Succulents forum.

An update 5/18. Definitely fungal or bacteriological. Here's the same stem today after being detached from the motherplant since shortly after I took the first pictures. Whatever it is it spreads like wildfire.

how are the ones in quarantine doing? Are you washing your hands between the infected and healthy plants? Do the raised bumps peel off? what do the insides of the bumps look like? Do the bumps ooze? Bacterial infections are often very oozy, sticky or wet. I'd actually suspect a virus or a fungal agent. Do you get spores on white or black paper when you touch the bumps? It'll be hard to narrow it down without more information. It's a very good idea to quarantine them though.
