hamsters

świdnica, Poland

I have a serious hamster problems in my gardens; there is so many of them that even the natural predators can deal with the pests. Anyone knows a way to get rid of them that does not involve poisonous chemicals? I have several cats, gang of hedgehogs, snakes and bunch of birds of prey [eagles, hawks, ravens, kestrels, owls, even foxes like to run through in their way from one forest patch to the other] running wild around and I don't want to hurt them in the process.

Yaga, according to this pdf, in 2007 hamsters were considered to be endangered. You may want to look into current data on whether this is still a valid thought. Killing of endangered species can have some nasty legal repercussions....and there may be a trap and move statute/program that could be of help to you.

I know - I'm not into killing - just making them leave my garden. I tried some chemical repellents I got from the vet but it's not working - it only ended with cats avoiding that part of garden for weeks. I tried traps, but it seams that for every one "exported" there is 3 new ones. I called local ZOO but they could not help me. Still - thank you for reply.

Hi Yaga.

Could there possibly be an agency on this site that could help you? I couldn't translate the info.

How about live traps? I would think some nice bait woudl be easy to find to tempt hamsters inside. Made the right size and shape perhaps it woudl only cacth hamsters. I had one for a pet when I was a kid. Call the local schools and see if they are interested in giving their kids some nice pets. I di dnot know that there is some place ion the earth were hamsters run wild. Interesting from this far away. Gene

Hey Gene....Hamsters are an endangered species in Poland....they might frown on keeping them as pets....grin

Thank you all! I got a way to [kind of] get rid of them - incense sticks. The cheap kind - the more stinky are the better - just stick them deep in the soil near the bulbs/plants. Non-toxic, you don't have to smell them and there was one "mixed" variety that chased away ants colony - I need to figure what it was, worked better than garlic =^&^=

Here we use an extract of "castor bean" - Ricinus - to keep away gophers. Perhaps a similar product is made for Europe.
