flies and ants on trees

Hi

I planted a plum and pear tree this winter and they are now leafing out. There are little black flies and red ants constantly on the trees and there are lots of little holes in the leaves. These and my fig tree are the only trees the deer and bunnies haven't eaten yet (apricots and apples have been de-leafed already!) so I would really like to see them grow. What am I facing here and how should I handle it? If you need photos I can get some tomorrow.
