I am getting married in the UK August and want to use live rather than cut flowers as they won't just get thrown away afterwards, we can give them to friends and family and it helps keep the costs down. Can anyone please recommend any plants which I can sow from seed now, should be in flower in late August, suitable for 4" pots, red flowers (ideally dark red but any reds will do)? Thanks for any suggestions.
Red flowers in August in 4" pots for wedding?
Your best bet for an August Wedding using Live growing flowers, and Red, I would be inclined to use Geraniums, these are bought as small plants now and us gardeners can pot them onto bigger pots as they fill out and grow taller, BUT, to be ready for the size you require, you will need a greenhouse or space indoors to grow them on till about end June / July (depending where in UK you are, IF I were jusy filling mu pots and baskets with these plants I would have them outside by start of june because I would have time for the plants to grow slower, but IF you have no experience of plants, then I would for get seeds, these in our climate AND this late in season will be too unpredictable, especially now, May-time would be planting out time not germinating seeds and for a wedding it's a sure sign to give you stress, predictable failure and a lot of expense when you have to run around looking for plants ready for display, by August, most plants men, nurseries, garden stores have finished selling ready grown plants. so even IF you could order ready made plants you will be paying top whack for them as demand is over by then.
Maybe ask around some plant nurseries to find cost of ready grown plants ready for August.
Hope this helps a bit but good luck with the wedding, have a wonderful day. Best regards. WeeNel.
