She's about to... 69! Spring has sprung!

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Yep, way to long. If it's as hot at your places as is it in mine, lol will have more time to browse and chat, just to hot to be outside.
What's blooming! My Daylily's are beautiful, but the most beautiful plant in my yard is a red Hibiscus "Midnight Marval". It has just started blooming and will bloom all Summer. This came to me at last year's RU.
Angel Trumpets are blooming now too.

Nice to see you Faye, how are you guys doing? Love your blooms. Not much blooming here, just too darn hot. My brugs seem to be stunted this year, not for sure why. Very little growth!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Faye, Your H. Midnight Marvel is a bit ahead of mine. Buds here look like they'll burst open any day.

Hostas in the part shade garden that our neighbors' free range chickens didn't discover over Winter are blooming, but there won't be much going on there until Mums pop in the Fall. My main Sunny bed is in its heyday, blooms are about two weeks later than last year, and is now an explosion of color!

Oriental Trumpet Lilies are just starting to open. This pink one is Robina and has the most heavenly spicy sweet scent.

Hi all you Girly girls! It has been a while. Hasn't been horrible hot here yet, been dry at my house, rained all around me but not here... ;(

Pretty pretty pics you all.

Watched a show today that featured Marfa Texas..anyone heard of it? Suppose to be an arts little city out in western Texas? They were showing places you could rent, and one of them was a teepee and it was so cool...the other was vintage trailers all revamped..said it had lots of art galleries and resturants.

Got the potting bench cleaned off, washed and tomorrow I am going to primer it...so excited. Don't want to show pics until I get it done so you can see beginning and end.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Marfa is about 4 hours from me. I have driven through there several times, and there are really cool places to visit. It is also a famous spot for people to go and watch the Marfa lights, some say ufo's, some say car lights out in the distance.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I wondered if you were close to there. Seemed funny to have an artsy place which looked like it was quite a ways from a big town. Ohhhhh....Marfa lights gonna have to look that up, we have a place in southern Mo that has a floating light. Sounds like a road trip when I get to retire...fun

Well had planned on being out priming by now but of course...rofl it looks like it could pour any second! Just my luck LOL So I am doing nothing. Resting, DGD spent the night Friday and sleeping with her is like sleeping with a tornado. Then of course yesterday was nonstop.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

My Father started his military service with the Texas Home Guard and spent a couple weeks at the air base in Marfa....he said the lights were first documented in the late 1800's....well before cars and streetlights...he said they were fascinating and more than a bit spooky.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Ohhhh sounds interesting, gonna have to check that out. Ok moonhowl, rofl, ironic you are talking about lights at night.... just teasing ;) Marfa is on my list to visit.

Well got outside and I am covered in primer, don't know who has the most me or the potting bench. I have used 1/2 gallon and not done. Don't know if I am going to paint the inside. Probably should gosh don't want to but feel like I should...

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I like the "night lights" grin

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Anxious to see your finished bench Joyce, know you will enjoy it.
Susan, the Red Marvel has really grown more than I ever thought it would. I'm afraid next year it may be so big it will cover the steps. Sure hope not, I don't want to disturb her by a major move. Didn't show pictures of more pretty Lilys, but they couldn't have been prettier. lol, Thanks again Susan.

THE 19th WILL BE GREAT! Can't get here soon enough for me. Do you ever hear from Terri?

Beautiful lowers, Faye.

My flame tree is just finishing up blooming. I'm doing laundry and had to remove a cover of floating red petals from the rinse tub. Such a rough life!! If the temperature would just drop a little. Over 100 doesn't work for me.

hugs, katie

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Katie I agree, 100 is way hotter than I can handle. In fact, low 90 isn't so good either.

Katieburg, what is a flame tree? I am guessing it is a beautiful tree that us up here in snow country can't have..rofl. I tried to look it up but it said it was a name for several different kinds of trees. ;(

What beautiful lilies! After looking at your lilies dathzu I am going to have to move mine and pump up the soil...I thought mine were good but look pale compared to yours, yours are beautiful and huge. I am really excited about my bench, but it has taken so darn long to finish I never dreamt it would take this long ;( I want to start using it, now...lol Well tomorrow I get the paint. The top part will be white and the trim will be white but the base will be grey like the house and the shed. Hopefully it won't show dirt as much as white since garden, dirt, and me go together....lol

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Faye, those are beautiful!

mulege, Mexico

Our flame tree is delonix regia. Very beautiful when in bloom and has nice lacy folage most of the time. AS the blooms fade and fall the ground has a red carpet. kb

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Oh my KB, those are beautiful. Looks like what I saw they only grow in FL on the main land. I imagine when in bloom and when it drops the blooms on the ground are beautiful to say the least. I need to move somewhere warmer..... ;) We get really hot here and really humid, let's see high temp today 96 feels like because it will be so humid 103.... hotter tomorrow.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

katiebear, would love to see pictures of your tree. Sounds beautiful.

Snoopy was diagnosed with kidney disease today. I am convinced it was the new Frontline Plus which I applied about 3 weeks ago. Didn't know until after the fact that there had been documented problems in older dogs.

I picked her a bouquet to cheer her. ;)

Faye, I sure would love to see your garden in the summer!

Tired of rain, I have to admit, but it's been good for the garden for the most part.

so sorry to hear about Snoopy! Will he be OK? Did the vet give him the frontline?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Sorry abt poor snoopy. We lost our bassett hound to melanoma and we were devastated so I understand completely.

We just love them all so much.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Don't know ...the treatment is to flush the kidneys with fluids so I am giving SubQ at home. Make a sense, same as if we had a UTI or kidney infection.

Then they do more blood work in two or three weeks to check blood levels. I'm new to this. I was a kid the last time one of my critters had kidney issues. I'm also administering some homeopathic remedies for detox. And milk thistle.

You'll hear about it!! SiGh.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

The thing about frontline that 'bugs' me is I pet my dogs, and they will sleep on our bed so I am always wondering how much of this am I getting? Course really worry about the DGD who is constantly hugging him.

Ladies, Judy posted on another thread, that Jean/moonhowl had a mini stroke. She is doing fine, her hubby got her to the ER in time. Send a prayer for a speedy recovery please?
Thanks!

This is her posting...

I've been trying to reach Moonie for a couple of days, tonight DH Jim returned my call!

Jean/Moon/ My Moonbeam has had a stoke this morning. She is going to be OK, Thank Heavens.
She was having symptoms, got to Hospital they did MRI, UTI, all seems good, said it appeared to be a mini stroke,
Again, Thanks be, doesn't appear to to have any damaging effects.

Just please keep her in your thought and prayer, good vibes for a rapid healing!

MoonBeam, I Love you, Gentle Armwraps and just heal fast!

Just flyin' through to say ' Hi". Miss you all, but it is a crazy time here. Building a new house, packing, moving my Mom and the list goes on.

Mandy I hate Frontline and Revolution. It seems stupid to me to poison the pet to kill the bugs. What do I know? Love you pic with the bird on your head. That's the way I see you. The Dr. Doolitle of Greensboro.

Faye your brugs beat the heck out of mine. Once I get moved I am going to get some cuttings from you and start them over. Hugs to you and Ray.

Hey Neener, where ya moving too? Hope you not working too hard!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

HOLY CROW!

I thought I heard from Beemer.

I have been thinking of her a lot and missing her lately, particularly at the THe and the mug swap. I hope she is taking good care of herself!!!

It was a long day. I think I will try to sleep more hours than reading on the internet and talking to Cville on the Night Owl thread. But it was fun. If Snoopy gets me up I will be there posting!

Not sure I'll make it till midnight but I'm sure to be up by 3 am. as that is our new routine. Gah.

LK we are moving down Fruity's way sorta. Place called Floyd, VA. If it ever stops raining there so they can the concrete poured in my barn, I've got half the house packed and ready to move. Hope to break ground in the Fall on the main house. So much to figure out. I swore I would never build, but since we are moving my Mom in with us we have to. Next 6 months are going to be very interesting.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds very interesting. Make sure you take progress pictures.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

It's so weird having you post neener after being gone... been wanting to call just to say hi. Thanks for the update.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone!

I heard that, Neener, can't happen soon enough. You've been a busy bee to already have that much done up there.

No comment about the bird on your head, well I do have one but can't say it here...lol How's your Snoopy girl this morning?

How about some eye candy to start the day.....

Eucomis 'Aloha Lily Leia' (Pineapple Lily) -- from Faye

Caladiums

Catananche caerulea (Cupid's Dart) 'Alba' -- new this year. Manda, I'll try to save seeds or take a division when the plant's large enough for Max's memorial garden

Miniature Red Dahlia -- LK do you remember giving this one to me a couple of years ago?

DL 'Red Volunteer' -- from Neener -- and DL 'Siloam June Bug' in the background

She's very delicate looking, that flower, Froot.

Mentioned Snoopy on the other post, but we had a rough night. 2 steps forward, 7 steps back. I have beat myself up enough over dearly departed critters passed thinking I could have done more or I should have known better. I am hopeful I won't do that here. I spoke with her vet and with JB also of DG who went thru this with her dog Barney. So I am not as panicked or desperate as I was early this morning. It's a set back. Will keep trying to help her improve until she tells me to stop.

Thanks for asking. And - I wonder if there are any flowers in your garden from me? I need to make sure there's some dynamo next time. The 'Green Wizard' rudbeckia is not doing well where I planted it this spring. I think too much rain and not enough sun in that particular spot. I have to move it today or tomorrow before it craps out altogether. I think I'll put it in a pot to let it recover.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

It's been raining so much that I haven't been able to spray for the deer. The blippitty blippin things have eaten off all my daylilies. Even the ones in the fence. Ate the hydrangeas too. Not a happy camper right now. I don't even go out and walk around because there is nothing to see. :(

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Pretty pretty pics their Fruity.... I have red volunteer also and it blooms like crazy.

Rain? what is that? None of that in these parts again this year!

Poor Snoop, so hope it all turns around.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Promise not to beat yourself up should her outcome take a turn for the worst, Manda. I did that myself when I lost Peanut, and he just died from old age. As far as plants, let's see.....Sago Palm has eight or ten new fronds now, the most ever. The Spearmint is living in the half whiskey barrel. Mountain Mint is happy in its in-ground pot. I definitely want more. And your Milkweed seedlings are doing well. Remind me of the name? I think you said they were tropical. I nursed the double yellow Begonia over Winter, evidently too much.

Neener, I never knew deer were attracted to Hydrangeas and probably shouldn't even ask about your Azaleas. For a small consolation and maybe a thought to tuck away after you move, in addition to fencing you've planned...hubs planted a huge deer plot at the bottom end of our field and...knock on wood...they only nipped on a couple of Daylily buds early on in May.

Lilies are among my favs this year. I've been slowly moving many of mine out of pots into the main bed when it hasn't been raining. Hello? It's rained around here for how long now? At least a month almost every day until this week, and now I don't even want to go outside to face the horribly humidity.

Fruity, that is doing really good for you! Love all the blooms!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Froots for reminding me, particularly of the sago palm. I just knew you'd have the space and time to give her that I didn't. Yaaaay.

I have been thinking back on the "should have" and "could have" and "why didn't I" from every animal that has gone within the last several years. I am not going to do that this time if/when she goes. There are so many unknowns, and even like plants, have to remind myself that everything must die. Except for me. There's a 45 year old mother in Greensboro who has found the secret of youth and looks 21. She's pissing everybody off, at least says the advertisements that pop up these days. I am going to track her down to find the fountain of youth.

on topic - I think I mentioned I am going to dig up the 'Green Wizard' today. I will separate the little offshoots when I pull the main plant. Good grief it looks poorly. It looked better with snow on it than it does today. I will definitely have a little plant for you there in the fall.

Neener - sorry it makes you crazy when critters eat your plants. Since I plant most of mine HOPING that they will come to eat them, I can't sympathize. Still love you and love seeing you posting again. :)

Snoopy had a rough morning but resting now. I'm learning to do just a little at a time. She's a small dog (about 16 lbs now) so a little bit of anything goes a long way.

Will keep you posted. thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.

Hey guys here is some info on iris seed collecting for the iris farmer by me. Have you ever collected and planted iris seeds? Very interesting....

If you are saving seeds to plant from your irises, start watching the pods about now, and if you see a split in the top of the pod, break off the pod and strip the seeds out and place in envelopes for later planting. I guess I had better stop right there and talk about saving and planting seeds after you have collected them.

There are a great many variations in planting iris seeds. Some people plant the seeds immediately after they are collected. Some of us, and I am one, collect the seeds and plant them later in the fall or early winter. Another group collects the seeds and places them in freezer bags with moisture added. These bags are then stored in the crisper portion of the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks. Finally they are planted. Here’s my opinion for what it is worth. The first two methods probably work best in cold climate areas. The seeds from most bearded irises need several freezes to break the seed coat and germinate. I said most, please don’t flood me with e-mails saying you don’t do this and they sprout anyway. There are always exceptions to the basic culture ideas. If you are a warm climate state that gets very little freezes each winter, I am certain you will get better germination if you chill the seeds as I will direct you. Place the seeds in a freezer bag and add a moist paper towel in with the seeds. Don’t just soak the towel and put it in. Wet the towel and wring it out before putting it in. You don’t much moisture to do this.

I don’t chill my seeds. We get plenty of cold snaps in the winter and I get good germination in most years. I also believe the sooner you get the seeds planted in the fall and the more freezes you get, the better your germination will be.

Let’s look at some more methods of planting seeds. Some plant directly in the soil. Others, like me, plant in pots or cans. I use a potting medium named Pro–Mix BX. This is a very good mix that I have used for years. I think any good potting mix will work, but I don’t like to use garden soil. It just packs too hard in the cans. I plant in one gallon coffee or vegetable cans that a local café saves for me. Punch a few holes in the bottom and fill to just below the rim. Sew your seeds in the can and cover with about one-half of an inch of the soil mix and set outside for the winter. I don’t like to put more than 30 seeds in a can. Once again, the more freezes you get, the better your germination may be.

If you want to plant in open ground, you can do this anytime after harvesting the seeds. One problem with this is that you will have weeds and grass germinating with your seedlings. Also iris seeds can germinate for years after being planted.

If all goes well, you should see seedlings sprouting in the spring. One little note here. Some crosses just don’t germinate. I know it is terribly upsetting, but it is a just a fact some seeds don’t germinate due to genetic problems. When the plants reach 5 or 6 inches in height, we suggest separating them so they don’t all grow together. One foot apart will be good to start with. Be sure to water the new babies until they get established, at least once a week. You should see bloom in 2 or 3 years, sometimes even the first year. Remember, full sun and good drainage is a must for good iris growth.

If you follow us on Facebook, we are having a name contest for one of our seedlings this weekend. Go to our page on Facebook and give us your name suggestions. If we chose your name, you will get a free plant of the $50.00 iris. Also, don’t forget, orders over $50.00 in irises can chose from one of 4 $50.00 Bonus irises on the home page as our gift to you for ordering.

Thank you for listening and God Bless you and your gardens. As always please remember our military all over the world.

Respectfully,

Jim and Lamoyne Hedgecock
