Hi. My (Wonderful) pomegranates that froze down to the ground in 2011 are now about 6' and blooming again! They only bloomed once, lightly, before they froze so I didn't experience this before. Now they are loaded with buds but all the buds come in a set of three. There's a big bud in the middle and two tiny buds on each side. Nothing's bloomed yet, so this might be a problem that takes care of itself (in that the little ones won't bloom), but I'm wondering if I should pinch the little buds off or just leave them alone.
Thanks!
Debra
Pomegranate, buds in sets of three...pinch two?
Mine (Wonderful Pomegranite) will grow a lot of fruit in 2s and 3s, and the fruit is small. If I had time I would pinch the side buds, or let them start to turn into fruit and keep only the one that is largest or best placed on the branch. Also thin them away from each other along the branch so there is no more than about 1 fruit per foot of branch.
So, thin now, or thin later (not too much later) and you will get fewer, but much larger fruit.
Thanks, Diana. I'd rather have larger fruit. The one season it did bloom I got two huge poms. They really were wonderful! Thanks for the advice to thin the total number off the branches...I hadn't thought of that.
