It takes days to organize my potted collections such as alocasia colocasia elephant ears , plumerias, bananas and other tropicals.
In the fall I hire somebody to un pot all of them and find a place in the garage. I have 3-- 5 tier shelving and carefully situate every pot so DH does not get upset. It is 3 days work and I am so lucky to be able to get help at a reasonable rate and amazingly get calls if I need help.
A lot are kept in pots but the big ones are removed from the pots. Spring is here so all the plants need to come out and repotted. All pots are saved cleaned and stored in an organized way so DH does not get upset. I had learned not to cross him otherwise he complains how much time and money I spend on my addictions!!! LOL!!! I hope you can see the picture.
I have a work area way at the back and I have to put a drape so it dies not become an eyesore. I will take pictures in 3 weeks.
Not to mention the over 500 potted hosta!!
This weekend I put in at least 20 hours and had to take heavy pain killers for my back. I hired someone for one day and the other days they could not make it. Hired help had to come when DH is playing golf otherwise he will complain and ask me how much I am paying. It is raining here today so he is at home.
I will continue the ordeal soon.
Belle
Ahhh spring job!!!
WHOA, over 500 hostas!!! no wonder you hire someone!!
Hostas are 99% potted and displayed in tier stage like treated wood.very few are in ground.
I fractured my ankle last summer and DH took advantage of the situation , he threw a lot of my collection because I am running out of space.
I still have 40 different alocasia colocasia to pot and I hope the person I hired tomorrow is coming.
i forgot to mention that i also have varieties of sedums.
All these makes me HAPPY!!!
Belle
Hi Belle, you sound like my kind of girl, so sweat and innocent till someone rattles your cage, I think your DH is about to cross that line eh,
Have you thought about getting your DH potted up, I feel sure that his constant moaning about your harmless hobby, throwing out your beloved plants while unable to protect them due to injury, would be an excellent Alibi for murder, after all, he has his golf, immaculate garage, so I assume he also owns an immaculate car, therefore you need to start doing a deal with his highness (sorry your DH) ask him to choose a golf club you can throw out and he can choose a plant to discard. Seriously, you need to take better care of yourself, a broken ankle can take a lot longer to heal than you think and damp / cooler weather is something to be aware of as it can affect the damaged bone area later on in life.
I dont understand why you take most plants out of there pots, I would have thought they would have been safer inside the pots, then come spring, you either top dress the potted plants or remove the plant come spring, trim some roots away and re-pot back into same pot with fresh soil OR top dress the same pot OR go up a size only if it is essential. I assume you stop watering in winter anyway, or very little water required, you just remove the dead foliage as it goes dry or droops.
I wish you all the luck in the world Belle, stick with it and just keep an eye on your husbands golfing program, get friendly with the club captain and ask him / her to call you soon as DH leaves the clubhouse for home, ha, ha, ha, I'm joking Bell but on the other hand, cant let your DH off with his tight control on a hobby like gardening.
Best regards, WeeNel.
WeeNell,
I have to unpot my tropicals because I have hundreds of plants they will never fit in my part of the garage if they are in pots. It is a disease and an addiction!! LOL!!!
I have too much and it is overwhelming to someone who does not like gardening. Some does not appreciate my yard.and my garden.
Dh has OCD I think, it runs in the family and the 2 brothers who live in Maui are even worse. Our daughter is also bad. Super clean and very organized.
I will be posting my beds when I get home.
Belle
I have a grandson who is Autistic, believe me I know what it's like having someone who likes everything in some kind of order, even IF it's his order, it all makes some kind of sense to him, he's adorable, handsome, and has a good sense of humour but cant verbally communicate with us other humans, that don't mean he is not any good at telling us what he wants or don't want. he is now 21 years old and is much calmer, accepts more instructions and we love him to bit's.
I have friends who constantly tell me they could not live with the strict routine my Grandson has to stick to but hey, it's all sense to him and he harms no one.
Wish he could garden, golf or do other activities we so called normal people do but, he loves his jig-saw puzzles, because he likes shapes, so maybe I could get my Grandson to get design a few garden beds for me ha, ha, ha.
Carry on doing your gardening in pot's Belle, I would imagine doing thus is a good therapy for you as well as enjoyment, but don't over do it, you sound like you start off doing several pots and then you have done too many and hurt yourself, that's not good for you and what will happen if you injure yourself and cant get out to tend the plants.
Remember to be kind to yourself as well as your plants.
Best regards. WeeNel.
WeeNell,
We have an almost 1/2 acre lot and had been in this house for 33 years. I like the way it is landscape which is like a botanical garden. If you like plants 1 hour is not enough to enjoy the flower garden with assorted perinnials in the ground. When i was working I had to take 2 weeks vacation just to get the beds ready, fertilize etc. At one time I spent over $3,000.00 just on plants alone. Now that i am retired I can no longer afford it! LOL!!!
There is no room to plant in ground so now in pots. Plumerias trees as far as Thailand and coops from Hawaii. assorted alocasia colocasia and no ID EE . assorted ornamental bananas scattered and arranged through out the yard and DH rearrange. He has a knock of grouping plants and looks more attractive than mine.
Ibroke my ankle last summer from playing golf. We love the game!! I got thrown off the golf cart when my golf buddy made a sudden turn thus throwing me on the concrete cart path sustaining fracture both tibia and fibula. I have a plate with 7 screws on one side and 2 screws on the other side.
i went through a lot, on a wheelchair for 8 weeks, a walker and Physical therapy for 8 weeks.
I am much better now, back golfing with a ladies league.
My ordeal is posted in tropical gardening and water gardens.
Back to the thread:
Yes DH is organized and very clean. If he has his way everything is white at home.I am glad i am but I am getting there sometimes I have to wipe clean and dry the sink after I wash the dishes. counter tops has to be clean and dried!!!
To avoid confrontations i have to compromise but there are things that I can not do with my golf outfits.I have too much and wants me to give a lot away.!!! No way Jose!!! LOL!!!
I read your post on different threads.
Have a good weekend!!!
Belle
Belle, you sound like a wonderful lady and you and your husband are lucky to have each other, Maybe this year when your organised (what's does organised mean to a gardener EH !!!) you can send in a couple of pictures so we can all understand and appreciate the huge effort you go to end of season and beginning of spring / summer each year. It would indeed help me understand your love of all those tender plants that you care for like little kids that need mamma's special attention.
Kindest regards Belle and good luck, try not over do things.
WeeNel.
