From flower bed to sod

Bay Minette, AL

Shrinking lantanna bed by adding sod (centipede). Lantana that was originally planted died out a couple of years and now all we have are weeds with a couple of lantana roots still in the ground. What do I need to do in order to prepare the area for sod?

Rake it all out and level it

One of the first times I heard someone getting rid of garden to make room for more grass

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

1) remove the remnants of weeds, lantana and anything else. Rake the area smooth.
2) Install irrigation if it is needed in your area. Be sure to back fill the trenches properly so they do not continue to subside.
3) Add header board or other edging that will keep the lawn on its own side of the garden.
4) Add soil conditioner. In my area this is lots of organic matter, purchased by the truckload. Check with local experts to see what your local soil may need. Incorporate fertilizer, too. Rototill well.
5) Rake it VERY smooth, and even screed it to be SURE it is smooth. This is not ruling out making gentle hills or mounds, but making sure that when you mow your mower wheels will not be falling in holes. Use a roller to compact it, and find spots that need a little more attention. Remember that sod is grass with a little bit of soil and roots. When you are setting the grade make sure the finished soil is just a bit low so that when you install the sod it ends up at the right level.
