I have a 45 foot bed that lines our driveway. I just finished planting 6 knock out rose bushes in the first 30 feet of the bed. That area gets full sun except for about an hour and half in mid afternoon. Then next 10 feet of the bed gets morning sun but afternoon shade with the last 5 foot in full shade. What kind of shrub will work with morning sun only? I was thinking a Rose of Sharon but not sure if that is enough sun. I'm also thinking of filling in with ferns as they grow all over our back hill. Would love advice as to what I should plant. At the opposite end of the roses are 2 tall pine trees. I live in zone 5 and live up on a hill so the winter temperatures can get down to 20 below. I really could use advice.
What do I plant in shade near pine trees?
You could plant in a bunch of pacasandra ( sp?). It fills in nicely and likes the shade as well.

Morning sun = Hydrangea heaven!
So sorry I haven't replied, but I was unable to connect to the website. Not sure if it was on my end or this end. Thankfully, I can now. I really wanted to go with a Hydrangea. I love them. They are truly beautiful but...They need so much care where I live to winter over. It was just more work than I was willing to do. In the end, since I wasen't able to get to all the great advice here on DG I did a bit of research on my own. Here is what I'm going with. At the end of the roses I've got 2 Japanese painted ferns. Next come 2 "Royal Standard" Hostas. Then 2 Peach Astilbe, followed by 2 Bridal Veil Astilbe. At the very end under the pines I'm planting 2 Ostrich ferns. Since my roses sit in the middle of a 4 foot across bed, I've decided to plant "Tiny Tim" alyssum on both sides as well as white geranium between the alyssum and the roses because I've read they chase away Japanese beetle which we have plenty of around here. I would love to hear what everyone thinks of this layout. Thanks for the advice.
Does not sound like a lot of plants for a 45' long area! Probably OK for the 15' long area with the most shade. Maybe you need more sun plants for the 30' long area with the roses? Try Rose of Sharon there, especially if it is protected from the very hottest part of the day, but gets direct sun most of the time. In that sort of setting we had quite a few Rose of Sharon many years ago.
I did check out the "Rose of Sharon" and that was another shrub I really liked. But its not winter hardy for my zone. The winters here can get down to 25 to 30 below up here on the hill. I put 5 feet between the roses so anything after the 6th rose bush gets only morning sun. I'm terrible about distance, the bed probably closer to 3 to 3 and half foot across.
