Can avatars be made optional?

The sad part is that even though we can go to other sites, our long time friends are here and we have built a history together.
I wonder if this matters at all to the people in charge of this site, I wish they would let us know.

I have tried to make my avatar as inconspicuous as possible. Just to see if I could. But I still hope that DG will make avatar visibility a user option.
