I'd like to arrange for a memorial tree to be used in Ichetucknee/Oleno, Florida. I'd like to order an edible tree or flowering tree that would attract bees. Any suggestions?
Need Help Selecting Trees for farm in Ichetucknee/Oleno, Fla
What size is the area for this tree?
If a small tree would work, then there are a lot of fruit trees that mostly get no higher than about 20-25', and dwarf forms of most fruit trees that might be roughly half that. The trick will be to find the right variety for your area. To produce fruit it will need the right amount of winter chill, and the right amount of heat in the summer. How about something just a bit unusual: Asian Pear, or Loquat.
If no fruit is OK, there are flowering fruit trees and their relatives that are not so picky about winter chill or summer heat. Crabapples, Cherries, Plums and others have a wide range of flower and leaf colors to choose from. Some produce a little fruit, but it is usually too sour to eat, too small or too dry.
Pretty much all the fruit trees and the flowering varieties will attract honeybees.
If you have room for a larger tree, there are a lot of flowering trees that get anywhere from 30' on up. Many will spread about as wide as they get tall, so make sure there is room both ways.
Do you have a particular color in mind?
