ANSWERED: How can I rid my small area of Roots from a Shrub?

I have a small area where I had planted few sedum.Every year I have to dig old roots out that came from a shrub that was removed years ago.Is there anything easy that I might use to stop these from growing?I rent so I am stuck with this problem.
