Good day to all!
I've been searching heartily across the web to learn more about my little apple trees. Started with six, and due to ignorance, I'm stable with the remaining four. They are now up to about three inches, nave 3-5 sets of leaves, and I cannot find any information to help me know where to go from here. Can anyone assist me, please? They currently live in a little 'greenhouse' from a zippered clear plastic pouch bedsheets came in, the end unzipped. The room they (and the rest of the seedlings) occupy is heated solely by a wood stove, and get full Western evening sun in the bay window. The zipper is generally unzipped for air circulation, and I rotate the pouch daily to bake them on all sides in the sun.
Where to go now with my apple orchard - 3" high so far ....
If the weather is OK, then I would plant them out in the garden. A good safety item would be to have some arches ready, and cover the new plants with a bit of shade cloth from the hottest part of the day, though it sounds like they are already pretty close to being hardened off with their current setting. Opening and closing the greenhouse is a good way to get started with that.
How much are you having to run the wood stove? Is this just for the apple trees, or do you have more delicate things in the GH?
Thank you, Diana. They're not in a greenhouse, but in the carport we enclosed & windowed, so it's been running every morning/night since November. Hallelujah, today's the first day in ages with no fire in the morning! I've got everything in it, veggies, flowers, apples & and an orange that finally sprouted in its little window baggie from the kitchen, so I potted it yesterday. All have had fluctuating cold/warmth as per the fire burning/going out during the night, and lately during the daytime, and I guess the lowest temps have been some nights in the upper 30's. (My brother was living with us from October-last month, and as he seemed to have absolutely NO sleep cycle, we seemed to have coals, at least, throughout most nights).
