We bought a house in the late fall and didn't get to clean up the yard before the winter. Now with all the snow melted, we have at least 10-15 groupings of the attached roots sticking above ground.
What is it? Neighbour suggested it may be Iris, What do I do with it? I'm new to gardening.
I would appreciate any help.

They are Bearded Iris, and they spread by rhizome(those root looking things in your picture). They really need to be divided as well, not just for more flowers but for the health of the plant. They go dormant after flowering which is when you divide them and do not bury them all the way.
