Blackberries old canes died back at soil line.

Santa Barbara, CA

This is the second year for my blackberries. I didn't prune them. The old canes died at the soil line.
New growth is coming up from the soil, and they look healthy.
Question is, what will I get? Are they the same berry from last year just producing new canes?
or should the new growth be coming out of last years canes (that I failed to trim back)?

I think they are doing what they are supposed to do. Berry production is on the new canes and the old canes should be pruned to the ground. Your bushes are taking care of themselves but I wouldn't count on that always. I have a book on pruning and care of all sorts of fruit trees, shrubs and such. They recommend tying that green nurseryman's tape to the new canes. That way when next year's new canes come up you know which to prune back (the ones with the green tape).

This link: http://www.berriesunlimited.com/growing-blackberries/info_20.html, goes into further detail on how to care for your blackberries. I'm pretty new to blackberries, too. Although they grow wild here in my pasture I decided to grow some cultivated varieties in my garden. This will be their second year.

Thank You, I appreciate the information. :-)
