Just be glad he didn't spray you!
spring time plant shopping
My instinct was to roll down my window to get a better look, and just as I started to push the button I thought, hey wait, this is a SKUNK we're talking about :)
I wonder how many other plants have the name "turtle" in them that would do well in the shade, hmmmm - maybe some plant files searches are in order....
I did a little "unorthodox plant shopping" at work yesterday... I was working my way through the greenhouse to see which over-wintered perennials were looking good enough to put out on the tables and emptying the trash cans so I could load them up again with more sad little babies that didn't make it through the winter when lo and behold, some of the babies in the "trash pile" were showing some signs of life!! Not enough to end up looking good enough to sell this year, but enough to give one hope that they would probably make it if given TLC... so I put them aside for myself. :) I figure, why not? They're just gonna go into the dumpster anyhow, why not take 'em home and nurse(ry) them back to life!? (when I asked BossLady if I could take some "trash" home, she asked if I was dumpster diving looking for a sandwich, HA!!!!) ... (and yeah, I figure I should ask permission to take the stuff home even if it was considered trash; after all, it ain't mine!)
Anyway, ... now I'm trying to remember what all I brought home. I think there's 3 Lavendula x intermedia 'Provence', there's 1 little Hydrangea of some sort (Bridal Veil, I think), a little Tree Peony NOID, a scrap of a King of Hearts Bleeding Heart, a couple Lily of the Valleys. ... I don't remember what all else.
I figure I'll pot 'em all up and put 'em on the tables out back where they'll get pretty bright shade. Everything I have grown back there so far has flourished like mad, so it seems to me to be the best spot. I sure hope these guys make it!! Lots of different things I have never had before, stuff that has seemed "too different" or "too daunting", though I couldn't tell ya why. If that Hydrangea and Peony make it.. I have NO idea where in the world I will put them, HAA!!!!!
Good job speedy!!

Terri, one year I grew "Pink TurtleHead Chelone" and gave one to Jill. I don't see mine coming up as yet. They're very easy to grow from seed.

lol Aspenhill, That's exactly why I bought the Hardy Geranium because of the name 'Blushing Turtle'!
Roses, the chelones are great plants but do come up a little later.
Am so resisting moving to a new thread, especially one with 'summer' in the title and the record low temps here today, this spring is not done with us yet. Also, to me, summer is the very worst time to plant shop or new plant plant.
In the trade, peak of plant sales happen on and by Mothers Day weekend in our area and supplies, new inventory, etc, quickly dwindle from here on out until Fall arrives. By Memorial Day most plant places are winding way down. Still there are a few bargains to be found as due to the vagaries of the weather this year and the economy, there is a lot of inventory sitting around. Whether or not any of us intrepid plant procurers will find a find before it is too far gone (Hurray Speedie!!!) is anybody's guess.
keep this thread as long as anyone likes- I only started a new in case this long one was unwieldy
; ^)
Sally, I'd be happy to move on over but could you ask DG Admin to change the title to something like "Post Mothers Day Plant Shopping? Admin does that you know. Pretty please? lol And, thanks for caring about the unwieldly part of MAF. coleup
