spring time plant shopping

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Those Northern Lights Azalea are very pretty. Orchid Lights is probably one of the loveliest colors (my favorite color, anyway). I haven't been shopping anywhere except on line and I'd better not look any where else because of what's coming in. I'm baby sitting for two of my youngest grandsons for 6 more days and my DH tells me there are dozens of rose plants, nandina, red jazz weigela, pistacho hydrangea and other bushes that he's just plopping in water. Wait til he sees the Caladiums and all the perennials that will be there soon. Not to mention all the lilies that I'll be picking up from the swap at Jill's, the plants that I'm growing from seed, and the pretty swap items that I'll be taking home!!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Little does he know.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Pistachio hydrangea??? Yummm, I wonder if it was named by a deer test group.

Bimbo, "hmmmm, it is definitely nutty. I can't pit my hoof on it though."

Light bulb!!! "It is PISTACHIO"

Dave the deer, "OMG, that is all I can taste now. I'm hungry. Let's go hosta grazing."

Hahahahaha

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Aspenhill, lovely finds! Your place just gets richer and richer...makes me want to walk your woods! Maybe you should get some of those metal permanent plant markers for your plants so you can do 'ecotourism' when you retire! I like the ones where the guest house is a tree house. Maybe one over looking the pond where you can fall asleep to the Spring Peeper serenade!

Roses - Same for you, your surrounds and grounds just get more scrumptious! And if there are talking deer around their thought bubbles are abuzz with each package arrival. Kudos to hubby for pitching in. Your Grandkids will grow up not only knowing 'common' names for plants but Latin down to variety as well!

My latest find is an Australian Tree Fern. Now to figure out what in the world to do with it!!!http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Cyathea_cooperi.htm#Cyathea_cooperi_sale

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I hope that I don't jinx myself, but the groups of deer walk from the woody area across the street, cross over my lawn and all my gardens, and then go into the woody area where my property ends. The only damage I've ever had was on the Kwanzan Cherry trees where they clean their antlers. Oh,....and once I caught one all the way on the other side nibbling on MY ROSE BUSHES!!! It wouldn't leave when I shouted so I had to go after it with the broom. They leave all the Hosta and other stuff alone!!!

break out the Liquid Fence©

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Someone told me that a spray made with raw egg works very well??????????????

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think the process that works is changing up what you use so they don't get used to it. a big dog would probably work, want mine?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

No thanks!! As much as I love dogs and kids, after my 2 week babysitting job (ends next Tuesday) for a 5 year old boy, a 1 year old boy, a 9 year old Black Lab, a 9 week old Black Lab (the Rottweiler was recently put down).........I want to go home and be without any of them for at least a week.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Phew Terri I dont blame you!
'hart' swore by blocking their path.
I have also read use chicken wire fence flat on the ground- they hate to get their feet in it.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

We have 2 acres of flat ground with the gardens spread all over the place, but I'll tell my daughter Suzy about this.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Also---and this may be a bit "tacky'---but sprinkling urine around will deter them too.
They look at it as "This Property is marked!! Someone else's territory....

if you have Guys at home--they can just go and relieve themselves around your property.

Don't know how long the scent would last--but--there IS an endless supply--and it is FREE!!!!

Very pretty azaleas!

I bought a pineapple sage from HD. Have no idea what to do with it, but bought it because it smelled great! LOL! Does anybody cook with pineapple sage? Use it in salads or something?

I hear that spraying watered down milk on the plant deters them. Don't know how attractive the leaf would be with the milk sprayed on them but if you can break there habit of coming to your yard you might be able to stop that practice

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Not to beat a dead 'horse', but hart swore that just breaking the deers habit of following a certain path could make them pass by a particular yard. She hung deer fence across a place where they habitually entered her yard. Even after the fence wore out/ broke down they stayed away at least last we heard. So you may not have to cover the entire yard with chicken wire, just a few patches might be worth a try.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh, that recipe sounds like it makes a delicious cake!! Now I'll have to look for some pineapple sage.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Yummy cake!!! Got the pineapple sage. Now need to learn how to bake. LOL!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh yeah I forgot you are baking-challenged, Sally!
Maybe toss pineapple sage leaves into a fruit salad? Do they taste like pineapple or like sage?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Caladiums arrived yesterday. Yippee!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Jan Did you order them from Bill? Maybe mine will come soon.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

So, I tried to overwinter my Caladiums by pulling them out of the ground, storing them in peat moss in a cool dry basement. I don't think I was too successful. I threw them all in a big pot outside, hoping that they might spring to life. So we will see. I bought them towards the end of the year when they were $1 each. Live and learn.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Don't count them out yet. They need serious warmth to come to life. Especially bottom heat if you can give them that. I still have mine in storage. All I do with those is put them in a brown paper bag or cardboard box and keep them in a warm room.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh no. That is why I put them in a pot outside. Why not try?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yes, from Bill. I am never successful in overwintering them. A friend and I shared an order.

I get Red Flash
FM Joyner
white Queen

Last year we got #2 's and I wasn't that happy with them, so I ordered #1's this year. I lve the colorful leaves.

I went to the National Arboretum plant sale this morning. It was nice that they published a list of what they had for sale on their website. I spent some time online last night looking up and marking my "wants". Some of the plants were already gone from the advanced sale members only from yesterday, but I still came away with a nice collection. As I was checking out, they told me that anything that is left will be 1/2 price tomorrow starting at 10:00. I wish it wasn't so far, I'd be going back. I think there will still be some choice items left, and would be a pretty good deal for any of you that live closer than I do.

I scored a chokeberry, a dwarf fothergilla, a deutzia 'Chardonay Pearls', and two brunneras that kind of look like Jack Frost but tags describe as an improvement. One is called 'Silver Heart', the other 'Sea Heart'. Donner, I was thinking of you with that deutzia - the foliage is chartreuse.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Protect those deutzia shrubs from the bunnies! I planted out 3 little ones last fall, and they were gnawed nearly to the ground this winter... sprouting out again now, fortunately! We just got in tonight (after a loverly week in FL), and my folks are visiting also, or I'd be all set to head back down there with you tomorrow if you were game. LOL I do need to find that dwarf fothergilla -- that's the one we always admire at the Philly Show, when we see it planted as a hedge!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I have a dwarf fothergilla, Harold epstien, it is a 6 inch twig right now. I really would like to have blue shadow.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Aspenhill, I went to the Arboretum sale on Friday and bought one of the silver brunnera!

I also ran into Paul by the White's Nursery tent. I was *this* close to buying a pink deciduous azalea from them. I think I'll take a trip up there sometime this week and check out their options.

I'm actually glad that I was busy on Sunday, because that would have been just too tempting to go back there for the half off sale.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Terri/ssgardener,
On the brunnera, I got one each of Silver Heart and Sea Heart, but they looked identical to me. When I got home, I rechecked the info links - Silver Heart is supposed to look similar to Looking Glass and Sea Heart is supposed to look similar to Jack Frost. I think both of mine are actually Sea Heart, and the remaining marked "Silver Hearts" were probably mislabeled. You said your brunnera was silver - question, is it mostly a light color with little to no veining? I'm thinking that would be Silver Heart. The Sea Heart has a lot of dark green veining.

I stopped by HD on the way home from work today - couldn't resist Astilbe 'Sister Theresa' because of the name. Even though I go by Terri, my given name is Teresa (without the h, but close enough for me)!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Lol Terri,

Well astilbes are nice regardless. The variegated brunnera is highly sought after. That stinks that FONA mislabeled them.

The national arboretum just sent out a notice today that will be closed to the public Tuesday - Thursday and might have to initiate some fees, whatever that means. Unbalanced budgets and irresponsible spending is to blame, I mean sequestration. Oops.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

No, Terp, you got it right the first time. Heehee

Love that you picked up that astilbe, Terri!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh goodness, Aspenhill, *I'M* Theresa!! Hah! Now I have to look for that astilbe... It'll go in my rain garden!

And I have no idea about the silver coloration on the brunnera. I remember thinking the pictures on line didn't look much like the one that I had. I will report back to you!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

As far as I know, there is a St. Teresa of Avila and a St. Theresa of Lisieux. My name is Teresa, also!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Have you all read the beautiful "ST THERESAS PRAYER"?
If you Google it--it is on a a pretty page--illustrated...

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you
are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite
possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing,
dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Gardenias and Jasmines are like the old pringles commercial...."you can't have just one" - or in some of our cases 2, 3, or 4! LOL Went to run an errand at Lowes and came home with a brand spanking new hardy Gardenia!!!!! Woot woot!! It's marketed as a repeat bloomer AND smaller then the regular ones. It's name? Pinwheel Gardenia http://www.gardenersconfidence.com/Gardenias/Variety.aspx?Variety=Pinwheel per their site they can also be found at HD. The site also shows one a little bit smaller and slightly less hardy 'Heaven Scent' http://www.gardenersconfidence.com/Gardenias/Variety.aspx?Variety=HeavenScent The PInwheel was in what I think was a 3 gal size pot for just under $17 (I think).

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oops - receipt says 1 gal $14.98

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Dontcha love figuring out you spent LESS?!?!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yesterday at my HD--I saw 3 HB of the "twister" Lipstick plant. $14.98.
To be honest--it did not look as impressive in person as it did on the photos that were posted.
The "links" (twisted leaves) were smaller than i would have imagined.
In my mind--I was thinking more like the size of the Rope Hoya....but, they were a bit smaller....

NO! I did not buy one as i am getting cuttings from coleup. Check out YOUR HD!

I should always carry my camera with me....Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sooo.... I got a Chamaecyparis nootkatensis Pendula (now called Xanthocyparis nootkatensis) at the National Arboretum sale. They assured me that it would stay very narrow, which is exactly what I needed! A narrow weeping conifer for my very small garden with a lot of Japanese plants.

When I came home and looked up this tree, it turns out it can get 15 feet wide and even wider!

I can't plant this tree and can't return it to FONA. Argh!

Coleup, I'm just seeing that evergreen clematis. Wow, that's gorgeous! I wonder if it'll climb a wall?
