Hello,
First time Fruit and Veggie gardener, so I have a few questions. I recently purchased the things I like to eat - Strawberries, Onions, Garlic, Green Peppers, Haberno Peppers and Scotch Bonnet Peppers from Gurneys, but since this is the Fruit forum, I will only ask about my Strawberries here and the rest under the Veggie forum.
I just purchased Whopper Strawberry plants (10 pants) and was wondering if these can be planted in a planter instead of the ground?
If yes, can they all go in one container? What size container? How far apart?
If not, how do I safely keep squirrels, racoons and a stray cat away from eating everything?
They told me it will be shipping in the end of April, would that be the best time to plant? Do I need to prune or cut back anything?
And can they be planted alongside the veggies I purchased?
This is my first time planting any fruit or veggies and as you can probably tell, I'm scared! So hopefully you guys can help me out. Please please help me!
Whopper Junebearing Strawberry - newbie here :)
I have always preferred to plant mine in a plot in the ground. Haven't tried them in containers, although some others have.
I space mine about 6 inches apart in rows about 10 inches apart. Be aware that depending on variety, most will send out runners and spread. Usually the biggest raiders of the berry patch are the birds.
Thank you so much! My biggest fear are the animals, which is why I was serioulsy considering putting them in a container. Thank you so much.
Certain varieties do well in containers. Usually the place you're buying them from will point out which ones do well in containers. If there's no mention of "great for containers" or something like that chances are they need to go int he ground.
