Perfect fall weather...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

...for lifting those bulbs and tubers. I just finished digging up my caladiums and elephant ears, and I've brushed most of the dirt off, and will let them sit in a shaded, protected spot for a few days. We've had a freeze, which killed back the foliage, and now our overnight temps are supposed to stay in the 40s and 50s the next several nights, so it should be absolutely perfect weather to let them dry, finish getting the dirt off, put some sulphur on them, and and get them ready to store.

Next up - Agapanthus plants that I placed in large plastic pots and sunk in the ground. Time to lift and store!

What's everybody else doing in their gardens today or this week? Here's wishing everyone the beautiful Indian Summer weather the southeast US is enjoying :)

Well, I put the lawnmower to bed and hung up the shovels, rakes and hoes. We don't get that much cold here, usually just a few light frosts that don't freeze the ground so most things can just stay in the ground. So except for some winter pruning on the roses I am done for the winter.

(giggling) well, lets see....hmmm....I planted a flat of snapdragons yesterday, I have 4 more to plant this week, I also have some petunias to put in. Uhm,,, planted 200 strawberry plants, the broc. and caulf. plants all are doing great and I will be planting my ranunculus bulbs soon...I think I better run, 'cause if notmartha sees this I will really get tarred and feathered...YIKES!(she is so nasty about my zone 9, ya know )

Well it was sunny, dry and fairly warm but the recent rain had waterlogged my Primula auriculas so it was time to turf them out and repot with more drainage. They needed dividing anyway, they grow so well I don't know what to do with all the extras.

I rescued some lambs ears which don't do so well because of the wet and found several Verbascums which had seeded in various containers. Planted them out with some Sages, Artemisia, Lobelia, Arabis, Thrift, one which I can't ID and Penstemon

Threw out the flimsy plastic pots, collected seed from Liatris, white Agapanthus and Nasturtiums.

Swept paths, pulled up grass in the borders and collected snails for the ducks and chickens. Let Chickens out for dust baths, shouted as they pulled out several Aquilegia seedlings, chased them out of the kitchen and tried to keep them on the lawn, Bo's too old to learn sheepdogging and has no inclination to herd fowl which attack him LOL

Wonderful weather,80's and still roses blooming'The leaves are falling(mulch)and my Kentucky Bluegrass needs mowing, lol' Most houseplants are in though and adjusting well'

Bee-yew-tee-ful weather one more day here, but storms are moving in tonight. I got my daylily bed "lasagned", another bed mulched with pine needles that recently sloughed off our trees; and the rest of my tomato plants dug up, the beds double dug with a layer of straw put down to compost, and crimson clover seed on top. My shallots are putting up nice, sturdy green shoots, and they got treated to a mulch of straw, too. It's nice to finally get things put to bed, so I can start looking forward to the cooler weather ahead with a clear conscience!

How's everybody else's weather doing? It looked like a really nice day across most of the U.S. :)

Same today here Ac still running, lol' One less day of cold weather for us' Party may be over soon though' Need rain, still suffering a drought'

I do a little something in the garden each day. Yesterday I transplanted 4 walnut trees that had started growing in the garden. I have a walnut tree that divides the vegtables from the flowers. The flowers around the walnut tree all did really well this after reading Tom Clothiers article on the toxicity of them and what I can and cannot plant. Mostly turning over stuff, pulling out dead stuff, mulching, and watering from rain barrels as I need to get them emptied. Already drained the "watering system". We need rain sooooooooooo bad. It's a calming time of year and I'm enjoying it. vic

Yesterday was chilly and sunny - I was out in a flannel shirt moving so fast I didn't really notice how cold it was until Stan asked how I could stand being out without a sweatshirt! I cut back one bunch of chrysanthemums, finished mulching the west side of the north rose fence, cleaned up a pile of goldenrod that I cut out of one of the last jungles, mulched the japanese maple, Colette pear tree, Dainty Bess rose, the little sweet autumn clematis and a little climbing rose that hasn't climbed yet. When I got in the house it had bee 2 hours and I was exhausted, but feeling good!
I set up the light table yesterday and got the plants arranged so they are under the right light. We went out for lunch and I bought some crocus bulbs to force and some chicken wire to wrap around the rose bushes to keep the d@#m rabbits away. It was a wonderful day!
