A late gift horse is still a gift horse. Lucky you and lucky for those bulbs as I am sure you will do them up right. They may not bloom until June, but that could be fun. Patti
Kilobulb Planters 2013
Today was a great day here, sunny, and we hit 64 degrees. I spent the afternoon working in the garden, and I was able to plant the crinum bulbs I recently purchased from a local nursery. I have pink amarcrinums that I have had for several years, but I've never grown crinums before. I hope they do well.
I shoveled snow for 2 hours while dog sitting for family in the boson area. Not fair. Patti
Plenty of snow on the ground here althought it us supposed to hit 50 today and is sunny so at least the snow should melt quickly. Another warm day expected tomorrow. I hope this is the last of the snow and my bulbs can really get going with spring weather.
We had warm breezes yesterday and overnight, so as a result, the majority of our snow accumulation has melted into the earth, nourishing our plants and bulbs. I notices a few crocus blooming through my topdressing of horse manure and the tulips and daffodils in the ground are starting to sprout - can Spring be far away?
I sure hope spring is not far. I want to see all my bulbs bloooming since this year I will have more than ever before.
Went right to the third shot as I need some color in my life. Thank, hopeful signs. Patti
I can't wait for my crocus this year as I planted about 1,150 of new ones last fall.
I went out to get the mail and while I was at it I walked down to the street and the sidewalk in front of the house. There are tulips up on my front yard. Some out by the steet and some further in. I have tulips planted all over the place but didn't look in the back yard or sideyard because there is still snow.
I knew there where daffodils up but didn't realise until now there where some tulips up also. As soon as the snow clears in the next few days, I will have to look for more. And I want to see if any crocus are up as I planted lots of new crocus also.
Rita, that is a mess of crocus, I can't wait to see your drifts too. I planted 450 crocus last fall so a puny effort compared to you.
Crocus flavus Yellow Mammoth
Crocus chrysanthus Advance
Crocus x C. tommasinianus x C. vernus Yalta
Crocus flavus Aureus
Crocus vernus Negro Boy
Crocus vernus Pickwick
I have plans to put in about 2,000 more crocus this comming fall. Maybe lots more. Wanted more last fall but I knew I couldn't manage any more bulbs than I had already ordered.
But I really, really needed the crocus as I had very few left here any more. Thru all the years of redoing the garden beds and putting in new gardens, the crocus just sorta dissapeared.
A long and slow inspection closeup of the garden this afternoon showed more tulips starting to come up. These would be the earliest planted of this falls tulips. This is a small percentage of them really, the rest are not up. And more daffodils comming up also. I did put in lots of daffs last fall and most of them still have to show up.
It doesn't feel warm out today as the ground is soggy from first the melting snow and then the pouring rain we have had lately. And the weatherguys say it is going to get colder than now again before the weekend. Spring is slow showing up.
Last fall I planted iris reticulatas for the first time ever in my garden. I had been thinking about getting some and finially did. I bought 100 each of Harmony and Alida from Brent and Beckies and planted them together in a big drift because I thought the deep blue and paler blue would really look great together.
Yesterday I looked and thought they were not up yet, today I went and looked again. Moved the mulch away that I put down last fall and there are green shoots showing. Even some deep blue flower buds.
Still most to come up, these are only the earliest popping up. But I am excited to great to see them blooming as they are a compeatly new bulb in my garden.
My crocus are not up yet!!!!!!! I want my crocus to start blooming!!!!!
Another warm day and almost all of the snow is gone (except the big piles in parking lots). I planted the 'gift' bulbs I received last Thursday in pots on the patio and heaped them with the slush and snow I scooped off the concrete to give them a slow drink to get started. After it melted, the soil in the pots had compacted a bit, so today I topped them off with pine bark mulch. I also checked on the pots of bulbs I've been forcing since last fall and discovered they were sprouting, so I pulled them up and placed them in the urns on the patio, giving them a topdressing of mulch as well. The bulbs in my border and annual beds are starting to show, so it won't be long now! Spring is around the corner.
Yes, hurry up spring.
Well spring seems to be rolling right on into GA. We had several nights in the 20's this week, and more rain. Today, I got home early enough to see that more daffodils are blooming.
#1 is planted in an area where Tripartite is planted, this is certainly not it, but I really like it. I hope it multiplies well
#2 Narcissus Fortune around the mailbox
#3 Narcissus Sovereign which is just starting to open
#4 Narcissus that is a part of the pink mix from Netherland Bulb Co.
#5 Narcissus Tiritomba was a big surprise, with the number of blooms open, which must have be spurred by the rain this week
The tulips are also really starting to come out and I can now see some of their buds.
#1 Narcissus Tiritomba close up view
#2 Muscari
#3 Muscari
#4 Front left bed with more Muscari blooming
I'm sending everyone warm wishes from GA, we're going to have daytime temps in the 70's this weekend, starting tomorrow, with more rain on the way on Monday.
Very nice! I love the narcissus in photo #1 of your first post. I've seen pictures of it in catalogs but can't seem to put my finger on one to help with ID.
I envy your spring - our spring only seems to last a few days - we go from winter to summer most years.
I think it is Rip Van Winkle. It blooms wonderfully well for us and we have it massed in a couple of spots, but not blooming here yet. Patti
From Brent and Becky's catalog description
Rip van Winkle - (4 Y-Y) (pumilis plenus) division 4, double; variable, old fashioned yellow flower that resembles a dandelion; a 'ragamuffin', to quote our friend, Phyllis, that looks like it's having a 'bad hair day', but is endearing to all who see it; all yellow with green segments interspersed; Heirloom; 1884; 4"-6"; early-midseason; no longer on the Approved Miniature List, but would get lost amoung the other Division 4 doubles.
My first thought was Rip Van Winkle, but this is clearly a bi-color. It also looks larger than RVW. Whatever it is, it's gorgeous!
If not RVW then this one could be a contender. Kehelland. Nice one whatever. Patti

Jill, what a gorgeous combination, your picture should be published. The color combination is so vibrant.

so nice !
I see now ... you are growing dandelions ... giggle.
Keep posting !
That is a great combination, Jill! The Greek windflowers add a special look!
I am no kilobulb planter, yet put in at least 200-300 early bulbs back in September at what seemed to be a century ago. Upon inspection today (at 30 degrees F), daffodils, which have been up for 2 weeks, are now accompanied by crocus. Reticulated iris are poking through, and the 100 or more new allium bulbs are making lovely rosettes. This is about the only time allium foliage is attractive. I added so many new bulbs that we can expect alliums for about 4 months probably beginning in April. Certainly with the addition of a rake new growth will become visible.
Am I the only one who can't wait for spring?
Marcia
I'm ready for spring... but I also like watching it unfold bit by bit. Crocus now, and reticulated irises, lots of foliage showing, daffodil buds starting to color up... The backyard bird chorus was in full swing this morning. :-)
How tweet!
We had another warm day today, in the mid 70's and the bulbs are just popping open blooms all over. Nice blooms Patti. Marcia and Jill, the warm weather will be up in your area before you know it, and y'all will have lots of pretty blooms to post.
# 1 and 2 pictures appear to be Jetfire, I thought I planted Tete-a-Tete, or that's what the package said.
# 3 Kedron is starting to bloom, it's planted close to a Leyland Cypress, which I'm going to have to trim for Kedron to get more
sun.
# 4 Gentle Giant, I planted 24 bulbs in 2009, they bloomed in 2010, and nothing again till this year.
My mixed Hyacinths also started blooming this weekend. The tulips aren't far behind. I have Pink Impression, Blushing Lady and Gudoschnick planted under my cherry trees, there's no telling which one this is. I have Sancere, La Courtine and Gudoshcnick planted in my left front bed, I hope I get to see them blooming with the clematis armandii and Camellias at the same time.
The Allium leaves have also now appeared. They have been planted since 2010, but I"ve never seen them bloom.
Finally, I just had to move this Ice Follies bulb, it came up in an area that should have been all Golden Ducat. It appears to be handling the transplant well. It seems to be true that bulbs will find their proper depth once planted, I had to dig down 6 inches to get this bulb out, and broke my hand spade. I certainly did not plant it that deeply. There are 2 split cup Narcissus that have also come up in the area with Golden Ducat that I also need to move. I'll wait until the ground is softened by the rain that's starting tomorrow, before I attempt to move these 2 bulbs.
Cem9165,
are you the reason Gudoshcnick is always sold out before I order? Lol! Looking lovely, everyone. Jill, I hadn't seen windflowers growing successfully....they look perfect.
Those crocus I saw in bud last week are still in bud and not open as yet. We need some nice weather but instead they say snow for overnight.
Yep carrielamont, I'm the reason you can't get those bulbs, I'm a kilobulb planter after all!!!! LOL. Annette
Hooray Rita, some of your first spring blooms. So sun shiny yellow ;-)
Spring is here, but you wouldn't know it from the weather! The forecast yesterday was for light rain all day, turning into snow over night. The misty rain started in the early afternoon, but by 3:30 it had turned into big, fat snowflakes. About 9:30 pm I noticed it had stopped, so I figured the TV weathermen were just hyping the news to get viewers when they said, "More snow tonight - stay tuned for details at 10.." I didn't.
This morning I awoke to the sound of a snowplow clearing my street. To my very casual eye, it appears we got 4-5" of snow. Clearing the driveway, I observed it is very wet and heavy (good for the garden!), so it probably won't last long. It's still snowing, but I doubt there will be much more accumulation. My bulbs are up everywhere, but I'm sure they won't be affected by the snow. They will love the moisture!
That's just beautiful. We didn't get snow, just 3 days of rain intermittently, and the cold weather is back. We won't be out of the 40's tomorrow, and the next 3 nights below freezing.
I looked at the 2011, and 2012 threads for the bulb blooms. At this time last year, most of my bulbs had bloomed, and the irises, peonies, lilies, and clematis were starting to bloom. This year, nothin'!!!! This cold weather has really delayed everything.
I am thankful for the rain, and maybe we won't be put on water restriction, like we have in years past due to the drought. It also means I'll have a longer bloom season in the garden.
