Gardens Gems Purchased for 2013
Ge1836, Thanks, I looked at his bells which are stunning, but they must be expensive as for pricing is says, "Call for Prices". Ha.
We bought our big Arkosanti bells back when they were affordable as a special gift for our wedding anniversary for a few years running. We didn't have our child yet. Now I find them occasionally when people don't know what they are or that they are missing parts. They still sell all the parts on the Arkosanti site, so we have fixed a bunch we bought as "broken". Patti
thanks rrr - those prices are not really that bad.
patti if you go to the online store there are pricing for some of the bells - opening bid looks to be $200 - must sound really nice! :)
Wha, thanks but I am buying lilies today. Just did the faraway order and now moving on to the Lily garden. Fairweather cat is nearby too. Could be an expensive day so no Bells and whistles for me today. Patti

patti!!! I have never been able to afford Torrens bells .I saw one near Oak Hill golf course.I know for sure it was 7G.Its the one that hangs independantly from a carved arch.
I would have loved one of his birdbaths.Oh well that goes on a list of" things I will never" life is short,no sense mourning, keep moving forward.
Where did you find broken Arkosanti's?
I go to junk auctions and flea markets in Vt and NH mostly, but will stop anywhere to look for junk. I have found 4 or 5 that had missing clappers or it's windcatcher or a broken hanger. Found one that even had one bell out of 3 missing and we ordered a replacement for it. Good as new at flea market price plus the cost of the new bell which was the most expensive part. DH just calls them up and emails them a shot and they send what we need to fix them. We have a lot of them. I will photograph our kids when the weather is better. Patti
I just now checked e-bay and there is one for $43.00.thats twice what mine cost in '76.
I can believe VT has some nice junk. Not that great around here .I am not a seeker of treasures like that.
Watch American Pickers on the History channel...they did a couple of segments on upstate NY....said it's the best place for pickin'
Saw it and they found some awesome finds!!!
That's a great show.
I remember an old program where they came to the town of Lincoln.I had forgotten about the cheese factory. They didnt find much but helped the owner tare down some vines.
I like that show.
Ordered more lilies yesterday. This time from The Lily Garden. Had nice ones from them in the past, but sure do miss Buggy Crazy's great lilies. Hope she gets going again at some point. I have a few from B & D yet to order, then done with lilies for the spring.
‘Ariadne,’ bred by Dr. Chris North of Scotland, is an enduring hybrid, with recurved pendant dusty rose flowers with creamy peach centers that have L. lankongense's marbled spotting pattern and light fragrance. Long, graceful stems carry an abundance of flowers that will last for weeks! With each new year, the stems grow taller and carry even more flowers.
Ariadne’ is one of the finest garden lilies of all time and should have a place in every garden! .
4 to 6 feet, mid-late June.
Each $6.00
‘Eurydice’ is a marvelous hybrid from ‘Ariadne,’ with a long panicle of pendant, beautifully recurved, shimmering “red raspberry” flowers delicately etched with deeper “rosepoint” markings. It flowers in our fields for a full month, delighting us with its glowing color and light fragrance! Bred by Vaclav Jost of the Czech Republic, ‘Eurydice’ grows superbly welland has
proven to be a truly outstanding garden lily worldwide! 4 to 5 feet, late June.
Each $5.00
‘Angela North’ is Dr. North’s darkest, most intensely colored Lilium lankongense hybrid. Its tall stems carry a myriad of graceful, nodding flowers that are deep grape purple! Rich, vibrantly colored flowers truly shine!
3 to 5 feet and taller, late June.
Each $15.00
‘Spice Islands’ () is a hardy beauty! Peach melon upfacing flowers are sprinkled with cinnamon, carried on a perfect candelabrum inflorescence. Treat yourself!
4 feet, late June.
3/$15.00
‘Peach Lace’(Lily Garden bred) (LG) is another wonderful hybrid from ‘Ariadne!’ It has larger, fragrant, lightly ruffled flowers in a deeper shade of peach with a luscious pink reverse. It carries the lovely “rosepoint” pattern all the way to its petal tips, clearly visible even on the reverse of the flower! It began to flower 3 weeks ahead of ‘Ariadne’ this summer, and its long inflorescence of Turk’s-cap flowers remained in bloom for 4 weeks! This robust triploid is a vigorous grower; plant a few and you'll have a lovely mass of stems in a season or two.
Special price!
Each $8.00
2 Each $7.00 14.00‘Karen North’ is another wonderful Lilium lankongense hybrid from Dr. North that has been drawing raves in our field! Coral rose buds abound on tall, willowy stems, opening one by one for weeks to reveal warm coral-orange flowers with plum-colored spreckles. A hummingbird magnet with a lovely light fragrance!
4 to 6 feet and taller, mid June to mid July.
‘Louis XIV’ (LG) named for the Sun King himself, is a regally tall lily with golden flowers that recurve into a true “sunburst” form. A Popularity Poll winner with all the vigor of L. henryi!
5 feet, late July, the latest flowering Aurelian.
Each $6.00
‘Midnight’ Strain is a rare trumpet in the deepest, richest hue of purple. Even in our hottest weather, this lily holds its rich color and imbues the garden air with its perfume! Cool weather, especially cool night temperatures, intensifies the color, while warmer weather will make the blooms a shade more pink than purple.
4 to 6 feet, July.
Each $12.50
‘Gloriana’ (LG) gives a dazzling display of honey-gold "sunburst" flowers with brilliant red "whiskers" and matching pollen. High summer temperatures lighten the gold but intensify the red “whiskers.” Splendid flower form, high bud count, floriforous inflorescence, and broad green leaves.
4 to 6 feet and taller, late July through early August.
Each $10.00
Interesting. I will plant it in a cool spot to try to keep more of that purple shade. But yours is very pretty. Patti
Yes I kept it but moved it to where Purple Prince and Pink Perfection are.Its pleasant but no mojo for me.Some lilies are so much more special than others.I see you ordered Peach Lace. I had Rosepoint Lace for years then it disappeared.Lily Garden doesnt have it so I ordered Antique lace this year. The are so special down facing and speckled.
I am like you about falling in love with one of them and then have it disappear, but luckily most of ours are multiplying nicely. Though I know we have lost some. Going up to the family cottage in the middle of the summer makes it hard for me to keep track of all my kids. Bad Mom.
I did a B&D Lily order. I think with my Touch of Nature order I have plenty of nice new lilies for the garden. I did plant some in the fall too. Patti

I have Angela North, Ariadne, & Euridyce...love the candelabra types....
I too love those candelabra types, but there aren't many lilies that I don't like.
Here are some shots I took yesterday. A few clumps of narcissus are in bud. Or course it is N. Rijnveld's Early Sensation which is our first Narcissus to bloom every year. Lots of buds as well as a few flowers on some Hellebore, especially Helleborus foetidus Wester Flisk and another H. foetiedus called Sopron. Snowdrops galore and three different Hamamelis are out. I always like seeing the stunning early leaves out on the Arum italicum Gold Rush. I took a couple shots of some Solari bells. I have to go find a couple of fins that have blown off and do some repairs on a couple of them. I added a shot of one of the cedars that had real damage. Chain saw time. Patti
The hememollis looks great. Nice bell.
Thank you for the purity pics this time of year!!
Outstanding selection of lily bulbs Patti!! ^_^
nice shots there patti
broke down today and ordered a few conifers - picea abies pusch, pinus chief joseph, and pinus mugo tweeny - first pinus i have ever ordered - all were from song sparrow
Loved the snowdrops & witch hazel....how nice to see some flowers this time of year......the Litchfield Hills are wearing thin right now, we have one good winter out of 5.........Bill, sounds like some nice shrubs...I'm partial to dwarf pines.....
Dwarf conifers....love them too, but so are the deer. Been out looking for the blown away wind catchers, no luck. Powerful blow we had so they could be anywhere. Patti
Wow, Bill ordering pines! Apocalypse soon?
yeah, i know figured to be well rounded i had to add a couple.
Chief Joseph is a beauty. I have to take a shot. Glowing in the winter landscape.
yeah i remember when we first saw that one a few years ago on the buchholz site. curious to see what size it will be, probably about 16" tall although not sure.
i will be getting more mini's and dwarfs - have stanley & sons availablity list and will order 4" pots. need to order in their box quantity which is 15 for the 4". not enough 1 gal. that i liked. Might split the box with a friend if they see anything they like. The ones i ordered a couple of years ago have grown nicely - out of the 25 i ordered then only 2 did not make it.
They are just a natural complement to JMs. Been pairing them for years.
Nice Bill, i've been drooling over Chief Joseph for 2 years now. This is the other tree I want... http://www.bloomriver.com/home/br2/page_1354_7/calocedrus_decurrens_berrima_gold.html

Couldn't resist these ~
DINNER PLATE DAHLIA LILAC TIME
DINNER PLATE DAHLIA MOM'S SPECIAL
CALADIUM FRIEDA HEMPLE & FANNY MUNSON GINGERLAND
PLUM TART MIX GLADIOLUS (light & dark shades of purple)
HARDY GERANIUM BIRCH'S DOUBLE
Very nice.....shrub is pretty...would love to see it in its fall color.....
Those Caladium and Dahlia's will really bring color to the garden when lots of other things are fading.
I finally ordered an Omoshiro clematis from a co-op. Brushwood gardens is one of the few places that has them and I'm hoping that the co-op doesn't fall thru.
